Live from NPR News in Washington. I'm Jack Spear. New inflation numbers for March are not instilling confidence that price pressures are easing.

The government today reported its broadest measure of inflation.

The consumer price index was up in March.

Consumer prices rose 3.5% in March from a year ago.

That's high, but not as high as two years ago when inflation hit 9.1 percent.

But it was the other details in this report because it showed inflation hitting exactly where it hurts people the most.

The kinds of things people can't do without, rents, car insurance, repair costs, electricity.

NPR's Raphael NAM, so-called core prices which exclude

volatile food and energy also rose more than expected on both the monthly and an

annual basis. The Fed has said it expects to begin cutting interest rates

later this year, though that depends on inflation moving closer to the Central Bank's 2% target.

Former President Donald Trump headlined a campaign fundraiser in Atlanta today, and WABE Sam Greenglass reports the

guest list illustrates fractures in the Republican Party in Georgia and

nationally ahead of the 2024 election. Hosts included former U.S. Senators Kelly Leffler, David Purdue, and Lieutenant Governor

Bert Jones, but notably missing Governor Brian Kemp, who broke with Trump after declining

to help overturn the 2020 election result.
