Live from NPR News in Washington. I'm Jack Spear. House impeachment managers are delaying their effort to try to remove

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkis until next week.

NPR's D.J Walsh reports Democrats plan to keep the trial short.

House Speaker Mike Johnson had said that House impeachment managers would deliver their

charges to the Senate on Wednesday, but after Senate Republicans argued more time was needed to prepare, the

Speaker's office announced they will transmit the articles next week instead.

Johnson's spokesperson said, quote, there is no reason whatsoever for the Senate to abdicate its responsibility to hold an

impeachment trial. Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer says nothing in the

resolution rises to the level of impeachment.

We're going to try and resolve this issue as quickly as possible.

Impeachment should never be used to settle policy disagreements.

Democrats are expected to use a procedural tool to dispose of the charges

and will likely have the votes to end the trial quickly.
