Summary

Qatari officials announced late Tuesday that Hamas plans to release 50 hostages in exchange for a multi-day pause in fighting between Hamas and Israel after a deal was struck between the two powers. The extensive agreement will lead to the first reprieve after six weeks of nearly nonstop aggression. National security reporter Alex Ward tells Playbook co-author Eugene Daniels that the sensitive deal was written to encourage the release of even more hostages down the road and send more aid into Gaza. Playbook co-author Eugene Daniels interviews national security reporter Alex Ward.

Here's what's driving the day. Just hours ago, a deal was struck between Israel and Hamas,

0:18.5

brokered by the U.S., Qatar, and Egypt, 50 hostages will be released from Hamas,

0:24.6

and we know three Americans are part of the hostage group. In exchange, Israel will release

0:29.8

around 150 Palestinian prisoners, women, and teenagers. Joining me now to walk through all of the

1:19.0

So let's say it's the five days hits, 50 of hostages release.

1:22.9

If all of a sudden on the fifth day, Hamas releases 10 more, so we're at 60, we have another day.

1:26.9

And so on and so forth. There are also some elements about military movements and where aircraft can

1:33.3

fly or not, but the main part of the deal is what we've discussed, which is the hostage for

1:37.9

prisoner exchange, the fighting pause time, and the incentive to keep releasing more

1:43.3

hostages to add on more pause days.

1:46.7

Alex, you were on a call with the administration last night, kind of walking reporters through
