The second term of United States President Donald Trump has been marked by a sharp ramp-up in anti-migrant rhetoric and policy.

Everywhere people are seeing visas denied or cancelled, and immigration and customs enforcement is kidnapping people from their homes, their neighbourhoods and their workplaces.

Trump's promise of making America great again

trades harder than ever on hard borders,

ethno-nationalism and violent sanctions on people suspected of being migrants.

But the intense policing of migrant life is nothing new,

either in the US or elsewhere.

Recent decades have seen border crackdowns across the world and across governments of different

political stripes. Meanwhile, the turmoil of conflict, climate change and economic upheaval

have set more people on the move than ever before.

As borders become a more and more dominant feature of politics, as they embed deeper into

the fabric of everyday life, it's worth stopping to ask what actually is a border?

How do they work? And what impacts do they have on all our lives, citizen and

migrant alike? What does the history of border policing tell us about what borders are actually

there to do? To dive into all of this and more, I was joined by writer and activist Hasha Wallier.

She's a co-founder of the Migrant Justice Movement No One is Illegal,

and she's been involved in feminist, anti-racist, anti-capitalist, abolitionist and indigenous rights campaigning.

She's the author of the books, Undoing Border Imperialism and and Border and Rule, Global Migration, Capitalism, and the Rise of Racist Nationalism.

We talked about the Los Angeles riots, the history of ice and the war on terror, about chattel slavery, colonialism, labor discipline and building a world without borders.
