I was having lunch with a friend of mine who is this serial investor.

She invests in so many different companies, I think over a hundred companies she's invested

in, having launched, created and sold, you know, some very successful businesses herself.

And we had a good old chuckle over our salads.

Let me tell you, salads with a side of fries, always a must.

Because she was saying to me that with all of her experience, with all of her

investments, with all the people that she's mentored,

The universal truth is this, my friend. Nothing goes to plan ever.

Nothing goes as planned. I believe the purpose of planning is actually just to get you moving.

The plan itself often will change, it will shift, there will be twists and turns in the road,

show me a straight river, as my friend Rob Bell says. Show me a

straight river. Everything meanders. Everything is winding. But the best laid plans, no matter how intricate, no matter how well thought out, no matter how many brains involved, they just never go the way that we expect.

So what is the purpose of planning really when we think about it?

It gives us the illusion of control, right, which can give us confidence

and they can give us a steady good starting point. So let me tell you this, this is why I don't

believe in a five-year plan. I don't even believe in a plan beyond six months because

that's how dynamic life is. Look at the last couple of years, what the last couple of years have taught us,

right? Life is so dynamic, it's constantly changing and nothing is predictable.

Yet having a plan is predictable.
