I'm John B from gangreneation.com. On today's show, we have our weekly mailbag. I'll answer

0:31.8

listener questions on which undrafted free agent is most likely to make the Jets roster, and I'll explain why Cade Clubnick is not Christian Hakenberg. I'm not a fan of the pick, but it's nowhere near as bad as what the Jets did 10 years ago picking Hakenberg in the second round. I'll explain all that and more in a little bit. But before we get to our mailbag, there are some rumors about the Jets and what they may do at the quarterback position. In fact, two possible options have emerged, one veteran and one player who may be entering the NFL.

0:59.6

Let's start by talking about the veteran.

1:01.8

Russell Wilson apparently worked out with the Jets yesterday.

1:04.3

He had a visit to the team facility.

1:06.8

The Jets seem like they're looking for a veteran backup.

1:10.0

If you go back to the beginning of the offseason, there was a lot of talk about how the team planned to bring in two veteran quarterbacks. Do you know Smith was the first? There were rumors that the team wanted to bring Carson Wentz in as the backup, but that did not really pan out. So we got to the draft, and we're still waiting on that second veteran quarterback. Well, perhaps it

1:28.1

will be Russell Wilson. And based on some of the reporting, it sounds like this might be a favor

1:33.9

to Gino Smith or something along those lines. There are some suggestions that the team approached

1:38.4

Gino about options they had for veteran quarterbacks to back him up and Smith and Wilson played together

1:46.9

in Seattle. Gino was actually Russell Wilson's backup for a number of years with the Seattle Seahawks.

1:51.6

It's not clear whether the Jets are going to sign Russell Wilson, though. And the news yesterday got

1:57.4

probably more of a reaction than it should have. The Jets are just bringing in Russell Wilson

2:02.9

for a visit. Jets bring in plenty of players to visit the team facility who they do not eventually sign.

2:09.4

So it's not a guarantee the Jets are going to sign Russell Wilson to be their backup quarterback.

2:13.8

Now, of course, Russ is a big name. If you go back six, seven years during his time with the Seattle Seahawks when Gino was backing him up, Wilson was one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. And ever since then, it's been a decline. He got traded to Denver and did not match the level of play he showed in Seattle. Then he went to Pittsburgh for a year. There were some good

2:34.2

moments, but that ultimately was a failure. Then last year with the Giants only started a couple

2:38.7

of games before he lost the lead role to Jackson Darts. So Russell Wilson right now is in

2:44.8

the stage of his career where if he wants to stick in the league, he's going to have to be a backup
