When you think of a psychiatric hospital or psychiatry ward, what do you imagine it looks like?

Turns out the stereotype of sterile, cold, concrete and old is pretty accurate, at least in Victoria.

Those are, in fact, some of the words patients used to describe the spaces during the recent Royal Commission into Victoria's mental health system.

But it's not just a question of aesthetics.

The Commission's interim report noted that poor physical infrastructure does not support

the delivery of therapeutic treatment, care and support.

So in that case, what does it feel like to be a patient in a psychiatric facility? In this episode, we get a first-hand account of the experience.

On the third day, my twin sister brings in my ukulele for me to play, some nice snacks,

and a family photo of us when we were toddlers.

The next day the nurse comes in to check on me, disappointed to find this picture frame.

You can't have glass in here, she says.
