He's here, a landlocked country, Franco phone in West Africa. Now in turmoil, the events

are fog of diplomacy. In late July, the 26th of July, the presidential

guards surrounded the palace and challenged the president, the duly elected

president, whose name is Bazoum. Bazoum took his family into a safe room, called

everybody, especially the United States. Since then, it's been topsy-turvy as to

what the presidential guards leader once, but now we have the rebels announcing a

man named Omar Chiani is the new president. Bazoum remains in the safe house. The

United States and Russia are on the field. There is a sizable contingent of

American personnel in Niger outside of the Niami, the capital, who are building a

drone base we're told. At the same time, there are reports that there have been

visiting the visits in Niami by neighboring dictatorships, military dictatorships,

chiefly Burkina Faso and Mali. A whole of the Sahil from the east to the west is

experienced coups or turnovers by military since 2020. This is the latest, but it is

most confounding because this country, Niger, has a great deal of investment by the

U.S. and immediately the State Department has now declared a hundred million

dollar package for security and development to be suspended. So sanctions have

been visited already. The demand by the U.S. and its allies is that Bazoum be

returned to his rightful role as elected president.

Ico was the economic community of West African States. He said to be meeting an

emergency session later this week to decide what is to be done. Part of that is

talking of about a military intervention. That's enough complication. I welcome
