With Joseph Umar, the Executive Director of Secure Free Society, and Ernesto Aurocio,

former Foreign Minister of the Republic of Brazil, we begin in Peru.

There is very, very big trouble in Peru these last weeks and months, and the turmoil looks

to extend in 2023.

Immediately, the headline from Reuters, Peru's Balarthe, the new president, exhorts Congress

to advance elections amid anger over deaths, many deaths in protests, since Pedro Castillo,

the elected president of Peru, was removed from office and charged with crimes by the

Congress's legislature.

That same legislature over these last days is reported moving a bill to impeach and remove

President Balarthe.

So as you can see, the factions are awakened in Peru.

I begin, however, with the largest story of Peru these last weeks and months and years.

Joseph, Peru, as you help me understand, is exceedingly rich in natural resources and exceedingly

unstable.

At least since the late 20th century, it enjoyed prosperity in the early part of this century.

But since about 2016, it's been rocked by factions battling each other.

The close election that brought Pedro Castillo to the palace settled nothing.

At the time, the presumption was, Pedro Castillo was going to be heavily influenced by an

outside actor, a man who had been educated in Cuba.

Since then, however, there's been so much turmoil. It is not at all clear what the sides
