Professor Avignellis, the Latin American Research Professor at the US Army War College,

to look at the Americas in the New World Report,

and we begin where there is a crisis, a tragedy,

and doubling the tragedy is that we've been here before, Haiti.

The people of Haiti feel abandoned are abandoned and the question of what is to be done has been answered so many times over the last hundred years.

In preparation for this conversation with the professor, I did some reading on the occupation

by the U.S. Marines between 1915 and 1934.

So many of the crises we see today were played out in that period of time and the

withdrawal of the Marines under the New Deal the Roosevelt administration for some years came to a standoff.

But here we are again.

The violence is commonplace now.

The most immediate problem seems to be that the gangs that dominate the scene in

Port of Prince are now turning on what are called the better neighborhoods and

the US is organ has organized evacuation flights because the airport may be in the hands of gangs.

The port may be in the hands of gangs.

It is not at all clear what the scene is,

because there's very little intelligence gathering.

There are U.S. Marines deployed to the U.S. Embassy.
