LinkedIn just handed everyone—yes, even the free users—some seriously useful analytics, and Jay Schwedelson is all over it. Turns out, what you post actually impacts how many followers you gain, and there are some surprises in what works (and what flops). Plus, Jay has thoughts on the Apple Mail mess, the McFlurry waiting game, and why you might want to try a business collab even if you’re not Britney Spears.
Best Moments:
(00:28) LinkedIn personal pages now show exactly how many followers and profile visits come from each post
(01:57) Carousel tips, cheat sheets, short videos, and selfie insights win big for new followers per thousand impressions
(03:15) Memes and links might get seen, but barely move your follower count
(04:45) Don’t sleep on your analytics—impressions still matter even if followers don’t spike
(05:15) Apple Mail’s latest update is causing headaches for just about everyone
(07:06) The new Hershey’s S’mores McFlurry sounds delicious, but you’ll probably be waiting for it
(08:41) Collabs aren’t just for celebrities—every brand (yes, even yours) can do them for bigger reach

0:00.0 | What up? Welcome to Do This Not That, the podcast for marketers. I'm Jay Schwelteson. Let's dig into some tips and some randomness. |
0:12.5 | We are back for what's up this week from the Do This Not That podcast presented by Marigold. |
0:17.6 | This is our short episode where we break down what's going on in business, in marketing, and life. And then we sell our other episodes later in the week. So what is going |
0:24.3 | on? Well, we have some new data based on what LinkedIn rolled out last week. So LinkedIn last |
0:29.5 | week rolled out something very cool. And this is for everybody. It doesn't matter if you're a premium |
0:34.4 | user, which is a paid user or a regular user. But now on your personal page post, doesn't matter if you're a premium user, which is a paid user or regular user. But now on your personal page posts, doesn't work yet on company page posts. |
0:41.1 | That's coming soon. |
0:42.0 | But let's say you do any kind of a post. |
0:44.0 | You post a meme, you post a carousel, you post a video, doesn't matter. |
0:48.0 | After you post it, you can now click view analytics. |
0:50.9 | And for the first time, you could see, oh, I posted this funny meme, |
0:54.6 | how many new followers started following me or how many profile visits did I get specifically |
1:01.9 | from this one post? This is really powerful data. So world data research in the last week |
1:08.2 | dug into the most important thing, which is what posts generate what followers, |
1:14.6 | meaning what type of content on LinkedIn is really resulting in the most followers after you post that kind of content. |
1:23.6 | And so the day that they just released was that they looked at 3,000 posts from the last six months across 40 different accounts on LinkedIn, specifically and on personal pages to see the content types that are generating the highest follower per 1,000 impressions, meaning 1,000 people see a certain kind of post, certain type of content post. |
1:46.1 | What is the highest follower count resulting from those posts? |
1:50.3 | And this is all new data that's just coming out. |
1:52.3 | So here's the formats that are generating the highest follower to impression count. |
1:57.4 | So these types are generating anywhere from 10 to 30 followers per thousand |
2:02.1 | impressions. So you post something, you get a thousand impressions on average, it's generating |
2:06.5 | 10 to 30 followers, new followers. And those are carousel posts with swipable tactics, |
