I'm John Batch from visiting with my colleague Judy Dempsey of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

She's in Berlin, a senior scholar. And the NATO meeting

in Europe this summer is, of all the NATO meetings and all the world, I've been told this one,

pay attention. There'll be surprises. The question is, is Germany preparing for the possibility

of the U.S. either stepping back or stepping away.

Is Germany ready to lead?

This is a lot to ask Merz, lead the Bundestag,

and lead all of NATO within several months.

Is that possible?

Is he the man to do it, Judy,

because somebody must lead if the U.S. leaves the room?
