Okay, I know this happened to me really recently in a conference.

I was in Los Angeles actually.

But it's not uncommon.

In fact, one of the most frequent questions we get from managers about one-on-ones is

what to do when our directs don't address our agenda in their portion of the agenda,

which I mean managers, we want to talk about the things we want to talk about.

It's a reasonable question.

It's also a really misguided question.

One-on-ones, they're not about the boss's agenda.

It's about both agendas, about our agenda, and about their agenda as well.

So we want to make sure both parties have time to discuss what's important to them,

not just what's important to us.
