In April 1822, Mary in Percy Shelley rented a house in the Ricci, an old seaside town on the Italian Riviera.

Their friends, Edward and Jane Williams, as well as Mary's step sister Claire Claremont joined them during their stay in the home.

The Shelley's rental home was located in a wild and remote area.

The house at right against the sea, so close in fact, that waves often reached up to their terrace.

While Percy initially enjoyed the new environment, Mary hated it.

She had fallen into a deep depression recently after suffering the loss of two young children in Italy, as well as a newborn a few years earlier.

Percy wrote of Mary's depression in his notebook saying, quote,

My dearest Mary, wherefore has thou gone and left me in this dreary world alone?

The form is here indeed, a lovely one, but thou art fled, gone down a dreary road that leads to sorrow's most obscure abode.

For thine own sake I cannot follow thee, do thou return for mine?"

While in their little Italian seaside cottage Mary discovered she was pregnant, which further dampened her spirits.

It was a hateful day she marked as cursed.

She felt as if she were being held captive in a dark dungeon, both externally and internally.

Dark feelings of foreboding consumed her.
