Welcome to meet the press now. I'm Kristen Welker in New York City, and at any moment, President Biden is expected to depart the White House to head here to Midtown Manhattan, where tomorrow he will deliver a key address to world leaders gathered together.

It's the first time since the pandemic that he's spoken in person at the United Nations General Assembly.

Russia, the war in Ukraine, climate change, inflation, tensions with China will all likely be front

and center on the agenda, along with the rise in authoritarianism and threats to democracy.

Now, the state of democracy in the U.S. was at the center of the president's remarks today ahead

of his departure

as he pushed for legislation to address so-called dark money in American politics. Take a listen.

Republicans should join Democrats to pass a disclosure act and get it on my desk right away.

And dark money has become so common in our politics. I believe sunlight is the best

disinfectant. Ultimately, this comes down to public trust. Dark money erodes public trust.

We need to protect public trust. And I'm determined to do that.

There is not bipartisan support for a bill to fix the issues surrounding money and politics,

but there is support on both sides of the aisle for another issue.
