Hey deserving listeners, today I'm going to talk about the most accurately portrayed DSM disorders in characters and movies.

0:08.0

This was actually suggested as a top 11 list by patron Malika during our 11th anniversary show earlier this year

0:19.7

We asked for a bunch of people to submit different top 11 lists they wanted us to do

0:24.4

and this is one of them and there were so many good ones that some of them got left

0:29.3

on the cutting room floor and so I just thought I would do some of those now. These movies are in no

0:35.6

particular order and I actually couldn't come up with 11. I could only come up with I

0:39.7

don't know eight or nine or something because there's so few movies and TV shows that depict

0:45.7

mental illness. So there's two things I'm looking for. One, do they portray it

0:51.4

accurately and two, do they give us enough detail that actually

0:56.7

tells us that the character actually has that disorder because like in Iron Man 3 for example we have

1:06.4

Tony Stark who exhibits some PTSD symptoms but the movie probably for a good reason, doesn't really go into detail about his symptoms because that's, you know, it's trying to...

1:19.0

Iron Man 3 is a superhero movie. It's supposed to be PG 13 and light and fun. But you know with a twist of psychological issues that the character has.

1:32.3

So you know it makes sense that issues that the character has.

1:33.8

So you know it makes sense that they wouldn't go into detail.

1:36.0

So I'm looking for is it accurate and is there enough information so that we can be like

1:40.3

yep this person actually does have this disorder.

1:44.4

So in no particular order, I'll start with, there will be blood.

1:49.7

This is perhaps one of the only movies that depicts narcissistic personality disorder

1:54.7

accurately. I did actually a whole episode on this and if you want to you know

1:59.3

listen to that you can listen to that where I broke down all the different movies that claim to be good

2:05.0

depictions of narcissism and there will be blood as perhaps the only movie I can

2:10.0

think of aside from my next movie which which is The Talented Mr. Ripley.
