Fans cheered themselves horse for mage, winner of the 149th Kentucky Derby Saturday.

The underdog, under horse, beat 15 to 1 odds to bring home the first Garland of roses

for Venezuelan trainer and jockey duo Gustavo Delgado and Aviar Castellano.

There were thorns among the roses.

The excitement at Churchill Downs was overshadowed by the death of seven horses leading

up to the most exciting two minutes in sports.

Five horses were euthanized following injuries.

The deaths of two other horses which shared a trainer are still under investigation.

The race, famous for fancy hats and icy mint tulips, has long faced scrutiny for mysterious

equine deaths and doping scandals with Congress even appointing an oversight committee in 2020.

Still, the Derby is wildly popular, drawing about 150,000 attendees each year, more than

the Super Bowl or World Series.
