Hello and welcome once again to the cinephiles where once a year in the fall, John and I face

0:23.5

our fears and wade into a scary movie.

0:26.7

My name is Steve Morris and I am slightly afraid, but also a directing instructor and a filmmaker in Los Angeles, California.

0:33.7

Hello everyone. My name is John Roca. My knees are knocking, but I'm ready to walk into our Halloween, our annual Halloween episode,

0:42.7

tackling one of the great horror films or chilling films, depending on what our feelings are, that year here on the cinephiles.

0:51.7

This is after our 300 episode, right Steve? So it's a great way to kick off the next 300 episodes of this show with something funny and us confronting our fears in a funny way.

1:04.7

Well, and whether or not you define this as a horror film or suspense film or a thriller, I will certainly define it as a great film.

1:11.7

I absolutely love this movie and it's funny the way this came about because not funny the way it came about, but we had a different plan for Halloween this year.

1:19.7

And we, and it was a classic film and a great film.

1:23.7

And when we will definitely do next year, but then we lost the great James Conn and while we did a week of tributes because we've done a lot of movies that he's in.

1:31.7

Yeah, both of us went if we're really going to celebrate James Conn, we can't do it without doing 1990s Rob Reiner film, Misery.

1:40.7

Yeah, it's funny. You texted me just a few hours ago telling me how much you love this movie and I feel the same way.

1:47.7

I think this is such a perfectly well well made film.

1:50.7

Yeah, I mean, in preparation for this, I watched on HBO Max and I texted Steve this as well.

1:55.7

Like they have a great because they have a relationship with TCM.

1:59.7

So they'll borrow some stuff from TCM and what they have on the HBO Max version of Misery is this opening seven minutes from Rob Reiner talking and, you know, just typical great full on Rob Reiner, which I love.

2:13.7

Talking about how this whole film came about and all the people that were involved in sure Steve's going to touch on it as we get into some pre production, but it was fascinating and it made me very excited to see the movie and then when the movie started.

2:25.7

I was like, damn, you know, because sometimes you watch 90s films like, oh, right, like we just did that watch along a very force one and certainly it can feel dated at times.

2:33.7

But this film, although some of the techniques feel very 90s, the overall effect of the film is still very relevant.

2:41.7

I would argue even more relevant than it's ever been in 2022 considering some of the actions by Annie in the film and what we see now from some of the more unstable members of the fandom, whether it's Star Wars or Marvel or DC or on YouTube or on Twitter or politics.

3:02.7

We're seeing many more Annie Wilkes than we thought since that movie came out and so it carries now watching it carries a certain extra level of chilling in a real world way than than it did in the past.

3:17.7

I think that's totally true.
