Summary

In this Minisode Monday, Jordan reflects on a grumpy old man he met in New York City and wonders if this fellow was a grumpy young man, or if he became that way over time. The Cheat Sheet: Some say that people don't change. But if you listen to this podcast, you already know that's not true. The real question is: are you making an effort to change for the better, or are you just letting change happen with the passage of time? How do you see yourself today as compared to how you were ten years ago? Are you making deposits to your relationships, or are you constantly on borrowed credit? How do you react when things don't go your way -- do you blame others or take responsibility? We're always working toward something -- either by effort or default. Are you allowing yourself to have a say in how the future you fits into the world, or are you slowly trudging along the path to curmudgeonry? Now a few months ago I was in NYC staying with my friend who's got an amazing place right next to Central Park. These homes are super amazing. Each one is bigger than my freaking house here in California.

And I got on the elevator, of course his own elevator, one morning that week. And an older man he got in with me and I'd seen him before. Older guy dressed like he's going hiking every day for his day on the town.

He's got books under his arm, probably about to read in the park and enjoy the day. But I noticed something. Morty, that was his name. He was always grumpy and shut off. And it took me a lot of work to get this guy to open up. I'm not even sure why I bothered frankly. But it was almost like some kind of community service.

0:49.6

I wondered though, how did he get this way? Why and how do young folks full of life and full of optimism like you and I end up grumpy old carmogens.

0:59.8

And after a little research and a lot of observation, I came to the conclusion that every day we change just a little bit.

1:06.6

We end up making good choices that make us better, poor choices that make us worse, reactions to events that improve who we are.

1:13.6

Responses to situations that degrade us. We put effort into relationships and surround ourselves with love or we let them wither and we find ourselves lonely one day.

1:23.4

And this stuff just does not happen overnight. We're gradually laying the groundwork intentionally or unintentionally for who we will become later in life.

1:33.2

How do you stack up to the you of 10 years ago? Sure, you might have been younger and let's admit it better looking back then. But how much different are you and where do you see the differences?

1:42.8

Are you more or less generous with your time and money? Are you more confident? Are you more isolated? Are you selfish? How's your mood when you wake up? Are you happier? Are you more stable? Or are you less of both?

1:55.8

We don't become more to you overnight. We become more to you over time.

2:00.9

What kind of choices are you making? Are you making deposits to your relationships or are you constantly on borrowed credit?

2:07.6

How do you react when things don't go your way? Do you blame others? Do you blame yourself?

2:13.0

We're always working towards something either through effort or by default. We're always becoming something. Are we making choices to become what we want?

2:21.7

Or are we becoming more to you?
