Summary

Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable that you can implement right away. It'll make you more magnetic and effective. Today, we're joined by recent guest, Unmistakable Creative host, and author of Unmistakable: Why Only is Better Than Best, Srini Rao. He'll tell us how to write 1,000 words a day without even thinking about it. Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet: In order to effortlessly write 1,000 words a day, you need to make it second nature in your daily routine -- like brushing your teeth. Writing by hand vs. writing by keyboard. Activation energy: the fewer steps there are for you to do something, the more likely you are to actually do it. Have the tools of your routine on hand and ready to perform. To minimize distractions, Srini recommends loading up Focus at Will (a subscription music service that helps you focus -- with science!), and blocking all attention-grabbing websites (or your browser itself) for an hour. If you're writing on a laptop, have your word processing software set up so it's the first thing you see when you open it up in the morning. Before you know it, you'll write 1,000 words per day and you won't even think twice about it. Give it a try this week! The book is unmistakable. Why only is better than best tell us what you got for us this week.

0:18.1

Okay, so what we're going to talk about briefly is how you develop the habit of writing a thousand words a day.

0:23.3

To the point where you don't actually have to think about it, you don't have to put it on your to-do list.

0:26.9

It's just something that is as second nature as brushing your teeth.

0:30.4

And this comes down to some very, very simple psychological hacks.

0:34.7

So we'll talk about it how to do it in two ways.

0:37.2

We'll talk about how to do it whether you do it in a notebook and like a physical notebook and do it by hand.

0:42.6

Or we'll talk about how to do it in such a way that you're doing it on your computer.

0:46.0

So let's talk about doing it by hand first.

0:47.7

The basic idea behind this is a concept called activation energy.

0:51.2

The less steps there are for you to actually do something, the more likely you are to actually do it.

0:55.7

So for example, like, you know, it's really easy to brush your teeth in the morning because you go into the bathroom

0:59.4

and it's right, the toothbrush is right there in the toothbrush holder or wherever.

1:02.4

It's like the first thing you see. So your brush your teeth, like, you know, and so when I sit down at my desk in the morning

1:07.7

and you do this all the night before you set it all up, my notebook is right there with a pen open to the page

1:13.2

where I'm going to write just the act of putting it there because it's the first thing I see increases the likelihood

1:19.2

that I will actually write. And so as a result, I end up writing every morning.

1:23.5

I do a combination of both the physical and the digital.

1:25.8

Now, let's say that you want to write on your laptop.

1:28.4

There's two things that you should do.
