A lot of black people and other people of color ask me when it's time to move on. Well there are no hard and fast

rules here but begin with the possibility that it may be time to move on. I think a

lot of us have guilty feelings for saying this is not right for us and we need to leave.

You shouldn't do that.

I trust that you've made a good faith effort to work with the people, to work with the

organization and to foster change from within and if you are

feeling that frustration and perhaps that urge to move on then you should pay attention to that

and know that taking care of yourself and making sure that you're around for the long haul

isn't something to feel guilty about. The other thing that helps with that is

realizing that life works in seasons and so you may have been in a particular place for a season that your work there is for a set amount of time for a set phase of your life or phase in the life of the organization and it could be time that your work is done there and by you

staying you're actually preventing yourself from having an impact in the next place you go.

And lastly, sometimes if we don't leave, we

actually enable the toxic culture that we struggle so mightily against.

If there are no consequences for an organization

remaining stuck in racial recalcitrance, how will it ever change? I'm not saying that this is a

magic bullet, but if people of color leave, if black people leave, maybe that will send a message.
