I think it's important that we recalibrate our understanding of what success looks like when pursuing racial justice.

Well, a lot of times in racial justice movements, you'll hear comments like,

nothing has changed, this is not making a difference.

I definitely understand that. As a student of history I know all too

well the ways that we as a society can take halting, faltering steps, make symbolic

changes without the kind of substantive changes that we're looking for.

But if we only measure success in terms of perhaps laws changed or graphs or data or charts,

then I think it'll leave us very frustrated.

There's a lot more ways to measure success.

For instance, faithfulness, are you on the journey toward racial justice and are you staying on it? That in and of itself is a form of success.

Are you bringing others along with you or joining with others so that this is not a solo journey but you're part of a community

that is moving along this path. Another way to evaluate success is not just how it's

changed the world around us, but how has it changed you?

Are you a more compassionate person? Are you more aware? Do you have stronger relationships with people who are different. That's a form of success too.

So while we need to push for these substantive external, big, broad changes, absolutely, I think what keeps us working, what keeps us

motivated and what keeps us encouraged is evaluating success in as many ways as
