Summary
Christian's new book, Unscript: The Radical Act Of Being Yourself, which explores the importance of genuine connection in our lives. He talks about how social media can create a false sense of connection, and how we're losing the ability to be ourselves in real-life conversations. Christian opens up about his own experiences, including a moment when he realized he was "performing" a version of himself on air. He discusses the value of being authentic and vulnerable, and how this can lead to deeper connections with others.

| 0:11.1 | Hey, this is the Christian O'Connell Show podcast. |
| 0:18.7 | Now, Tess has sent me a text message and this feels like some kind of message because actually the one thing I'm excited to talk about today, something I've been working on for a couple of years. |
| 0:29.1 | I've written a new book and it's out for pre-order today. It comes out in July and it's called Unscript, the radical act of being yourself. |
| 0:37.1 | And it's about something very, |
| 0:39.1 | very dear to my heart, which is about how we connect to each other and what gets in the way to |
| 0:45.1 | deeper, real connection. And one thing I've noticed, and I know that you all would have noticed |
| 0:49.8 | this as well in your own lives as well, over the last couple of years, we are becoming more |
| 0:53.9 | and more disconnected. As we spend more and more time online, we're losing like this muscle that we |
| 0:59.9 | have to connect with each other. And the more time we are online, we think we're being social. |
| 1:04.9 | And if you really think about it, social media, it's actually that social. It's more about |
| 1:08.8 | the algorithm wants us to stay in the algorithm, and it feeds us |
| 1:13.3 | division and anger. It's not about true connection. That is not where true connection lives in front |
| 1:19.7 | of each other. We're losing this. And the one thing about why I think radio is a magical, |
| 1:24.9 | magical media more than TV or anything else is that. Radio is about right now. |
| 1:30.0 | And the radio we do and the radio you hopefully like listening to. And we've heard this to so many |
| 1:35.9 | stories from you guys day in, day out. Is this a chance to actually drop the performance that most |
| 1:41.4 | of us do in all of our lives? There was a point before I decided to move to Australia and really changed our lives where I was driving home from a radio show. I'd done four hours. I took for four hours. I built that show out. They had two and a half million listeners. And you know, sometimes you catch yourself in the mirror. I was stuck in traffic, which was every day in my life in London. And I looked to myself in the rearview mirror, and I looked away because I suddenly realized you actually haven't said anything for the last four hours that you actually meant. I'd realize I was performing a version of myself. And I think this happens to a lot of us. We're performing a version of us house. And it wasn't just a work. I'd realize it was starting to creep into my home life as well |
| 2:17.7 | so I made it I'm also realized how exhausting it is to keep up this performance of a version of yourself |
| 2:23.6 | and again social media's great there's so many great things about social media but what it also shows is |
| 2:28.5 | is a fake version of people and it thinks it makes us think that we need to be some perfect version |
