This cool fact is about how migraines change how you sleep.

0:05.6

Migraines affect about 14% of the world population, although frankly that number is probably

0:11.1

very low because a lot of people get migraines, particularly abdominal migraines, but because

0:15.4

they don't have specific headaches, they just feel like crap and they go on with life

0:20.6

never being diagnosed.

0:22.2

I would suspect that at least some of the time the number is closer to 30 or even 40%

0:27.4

where people have a migraine maybe once every month or two, but it's just not enough

0:30.6

to really bother.

0:32.2

People with chronic migraines can be debilitated.

0:35.4

What researchers have figured out though is that having a migraine pretty obviously would

0:39.0

make it harder to sleep, but no one had figured out what it did to your sleep cycle, the

0:44.0

amount of REM or DREAM and deep or restorative sleep that you get.

0:49.6

So they did a meta-analysis, which means they looked at all of the other research to see

0:53.2

commonalities and looked at 32 studies and these guys from the American Academy of Neurology

0:59.2

pulled together data from 10,000 participants across those studies.

1:03.3

And they found that both adults and kids with migraines get less quality sleep and particularly

1:08.8

less REM sleep or DREAM sleep.

1:12.1

And the REM stage of sleep has the most brain activity and the most vivid dreams and it's

1:16.5

important for learning and memory function.

1:19.4

Which with migraines also seem to get less sleep overall, but they do fall asleep faster

1:24.2

than kids with them.

1:25.2

Migraines probably just because they're tired a lot.
