to welcome as my guest a woman whom most people including me regard as the greatest film actress of all time,

Merrill Streep.

The 67-year-old has set the bar for nearly 40 years, giving performances for the ages in

the deer hunter, Kramer versus Kramer the French

Her latest great performance comes in Florence Foster Jenkins, a movie which hits theaters on Friday.

Under the direction of Stephen Freers and opposite Hugh Grant, she plays the title character, a rich New York socialite who loved to sing opera, but unbeknownst to her, had a painfully awful voice.

In the hands of almost any other actress, this character would have been played one dimensionally and proved grading.

But in the hands of Merrill Streep, humor and heart and humanity always shine through,

and this film is no exception.

Thanks to a series of advanced screenings for press and tastemaker, Streep's performance is already

generating the sort of buzz that suggests it could bring her a record extending 20th

acting Oscar nomination.
