Summary

We’re nearing the end of Pride month for 2023, and this year visibility, equity, and safety seem more critical than ever. Olympic gold medalist and USWNT soccer star Megan Rapinoe, now Chief Equality Officer at software startup Trusaic, joins Jessi for a conversation about pay equity, the importance of standing and speaking up, and the unassailable human rights of every member of the LGBTQIA+ community. In this conversation, Megan shares the journey to establishing equal treatment and pay for the US Women’s National Team, how building a diverse team on the field and in the business sector leads to wins for everyone, and why fostering belonging is a critical necessity everywhere. Check out Megan’s soccer career with the USWNT here and visit Trusaic on Linkedin and the web to learn more about her pay equity advocacy. Follow Jessi Hempel on LinkedIn and order her debut memoir. Megan Rapinoe. And she'll be the first to tell you that she never expected this fight to drag

0:59.8

the same size bonuses and access to the same things like charter flights to games.

Then, after six long years of publicly making their case,

1:10.0

after they'd won another World Cup, after their entire team filed a second suit,

then they finally won. In a $24 million settlement, the federation agreed to backpay for players

1:21.2

and to equal pay going forward. Now, this is significant for soccer, but really for all sports

1:27.8

and for work in general. These days, Megan is still playing soccer, but she's found her

1:33.5

voice beyond that. With her pink hair and her prominent relationship with one of the greatest

1:39.0

basketball players in history, Seuberd, Megan is an icon. She's used that status to advocate for

1:46.3

things that mattered to her, like pay equity. In fact, she recently joined a startup called Truzeic.

It sells software to help companies close their pay gap among other things.

1:56.2

Today, we're going to talk about that, and so much more. But let's start by going back,

2:02.4

way back to 2016. Here's Megan.
