Summary

When I first introduced you to Rachel Apfel Glass, Founder of GLOSSLAB in early 2022, there were only two GLOSSLAB locations in NYC. Today, there are over 20 spanning the New York Tri-State area, Texas, Florida and more.

GLOSSLAB has become a must-go destination for top names including: The Chainsmokers, Demi Moore, Lil Yachty, Lucy Liu, Jennifer Garner, Kate Bock, Minka Kelly, Neil Patrick Harris and PK Subban.

Rachel is the creator of GLOSSLABS, a membership-based nail studio. With an ethos of providing consumers with a clean, modern, and waterless alternative to their weekly manicure and pedicure services, in the rerun of this episode, Rachel shares how she went from idea to leaving her career in finance and expanding GLOSSLABS into new markets.

In this interview, Rachel shares how she bootstrapped her first two locations, tips for finding investors who believe in your vision, and how she manages motherhood and business growth. As for an update? Most recently, GLOSSLAB partnered with Joshua Coba, the co-founder of European Wax Center, as it eyes nationwide expansion.

Takeaways:

  • What started as a self-funded venture has grown into several studios with more openings scheduled in D.C. and Miami. Rachel shares how to test your concept.
  • Rachel and Lindsay take the mystery out of finances and share tips for raising money and finding investors that can offer more than just capital.
  • The service industry was impacted the hardest by the pandemic; Rachel shares tips on pivoting and how GLOSSLABS sets new standards for the industry.
  • The recurring revenue model appeals to many entrepreneurs, but there are hidden benefits like community and feedback that community members bring.
  • Many founders, believe they have to choose between their 9to5 and their business; Rachel managed both by committing to doing three things a day to move her business forward and researching the competition.

0:14.1

Mayhem too, you'll understand that this week I'm taking a brief hiatus from new episodes,

0:18.4

and I'm going to be sharing some of my favorite episodes from the first few months of Dear Fountain. First up, one of my favorite conversations from

0:26.3

the beginning with Rachel Glass from Gloss Lab. When Rachel and I first talked in the fall of

0:31.4

2021, there were just two gloss lab locations in New York City. And now I just counted there were 26 and counting across the

0:40.9

country with opportunities to franchise. They're popping up in Texas, in Connecticut, in Florida,

0:46.4

in Georgia, and really and truly all over. Gloss Lab is a hygiene first membership-based

0:52.1

nail salon that offers members unlimited manicures and petticures

0:56.0

every single month. Yep, you heard me. They're unlimited. Founder Rachel Apvelglass created Gloss

Lab when she saw a gap in the market during her years working at a hedge fund when she found it

1:06.5

nearly impossible to fit in an efficient manicure during the busy work week.

1:14.7

And after the birth of her second daughter, Rachel and a team of experts got together and opened the first Gloss Lab location in the Flat Iron District of New York.

1:19.3

I can say firsthand that is someone who hates spending time getting my nails done,

1:24.0

I loved my experience at Gloss Lab when I was in New York City earlier this year.

1:28.7

I love this story because of Rachel's desire to solve a problem that she herself faced.

1:36.2

Gloss Lab has become a must go to destination for top names, including the chain smokers,

Demi Moore, Lil Yadi, Lucy Lou, Jennifer

Garner, Kate Bach, Minka Kelly, Neil Patrick Harris, and P.K. Suban. Most recently, Gloss Lab partnered

As you know, there's no blueprint for entrepreneurship. You wear so many hats, you burn the

minide oil, you pour your heart and soul into everything that you do. But without a doubt,
