Summary

Matt Rutherford returns yet again to the podcast, this time from his outpost in the Philippines. It's always fun to catch up and shoot the shit with Matt, but this time I really wanted to hear about his near-sinking on a Caribbean delivery last fall. Matt talks through the entire ordeal, from riding out a gale with all the pumps running, to nearly losing the rudder out of the bottom of the boat, to ultimately his safe landfall in Bermuda.

And when this thing passes and the wind calms down a bit, we're going to make for Bermuda under other smaller sea state, less pressure on the rudder. Also, because that stainless piece had shifted up the rudder shaft, it was clunking around. Like, not just was it not creating the watertight connection, but it was allowing the entire rudder post to clunk hard.

So it was clunking so hard that if you were standing in a cockpit, you could feel it through your feet.

want to hear about opportunities when that opens up. Um, don't know exactly what is available

It's, as usual, Matt is fantastic.

1:50.1

I need to make a recommendation.

1:52.1

The story Matt tells today, he told basically in real time on his podcast, which is called

1:57.4

single-handed.

1:58.9

So Matt had his recording equipment on during this delivery

2:01.7

and was like recording updates as this was happening

2:05.0

and put it together as a podcast.
