that much of masculinity itself is rooted in the concept of status and the need to maintain

one status in a hierarchy as well as looking down on other men that behave in ways that

could be perceived as unmasculine in order to affirm their own status.

And men must constantly prove to themselves and others that they are masculine and any

little slip up that could be perceived as unmanly, girly or gay is not only a blow to their

masculinity but to their worth as a person, which is why I'm concerned that even with an

emphasis on so-called positive masculine traits that people could still judge others for

not behaving in ways that they personally consider as masculine.
