Hey everyone, I'm David Bowden and welcome to the spoken gospel podcast.

0:05.0

We are back with our second installment of a different kind of format that we're trying out here.

0:10.0

We've done before where I get to share a sermon that I preached with you all and walk you through it a little bit and just see what you think.

0:18.0

I'm very excited to share this sermon. It's very personal one for me and one that

0:21.8

I had to walk through quite a bit to prepare for both theologically and emotionally. But it

0:29.1

ended up to be a really sweet sermon for our local church. And so I'm really excited to share it with

0:34.2

you. But it is a bit of fine china that I'm handing off here to all of you.

0:38.6

So grateful to do that, though, with you all. As I mentioned in the last episode, we're trying

0:43.8

this new format out where we share a sermon that I've preached from a smaller passage of

0:49.4

scripture. Right now, our local church is going through the gospel of Mark, and so I've been

0:53.8

preaching through Mark alongside a teaching team.

0:56.8

And why I think this is really beneficial for us to do together with you, our podcast listeners, is because you're able to see the deeper dive that we take into how to read the Bible, the gospel centered hermutic, how to map everything on to the story of

1:11.0

scripture, and see that applied to very small sections of texts. And this one in particular

1:17.2

is very interesting because a lot of times this passage is preached topically because it's on

1:23.1

divorce. And it's Mark 10 verses 1 to 12, and it's Jesus' teaching on divorce. And it's Mark 10 versus 1 to 12. And it's Jesus's teaching on divorce. Or is it?

1:32.8

It's, of course it is. But that's kind of the idea is that when we hear this passage preached,

1:38.3

at least when I've heard this passage preached, it's all about the pragmatic,

1:43.1

don't get divorced message, which you shouldn't, and that's true.

1:48.3

But there's more going on when we stay bound to the narrative of Mark, the context of Scripture, and the story that's been developing through the whole Bible.

1:59.1

And Jesus is pulling on a lot of themes to the

2:01.9

point where he's not only, or perhaps mainly, even talking about husbands and wives, although he

2:08.2

definitely is, and I'll unpack that. But he's also talking about the story of scripture,
