Summary

For the first time in Mark's Gospel, Jesus crosses from Jewish territory into Gentile lands to confront the spiritual forces that have oppressed the nations. In this podcast episode, David walks through the longest exorcism account in Scripture, showing how Jesus fulfills God's promise to bless all nations by liberating a man possessed by a legion of demons and demonstrating his authority over every fallen spiritual power.

Hey everyone, David Bowden here, and we are in our third installment of sharing some of my sermons with you that I've preached on the gospel of Mark.

0:09.0

We've looked at kind of the beginning of Mark's gospel, showing how John the Baptist prepares the way for Jesus, how Jesus proves that he is the Son of God and the Messiah through his exposition and fulfillment of the law.

0:22.6

And now we're going to look at a different proof of who Jesus is in his dominion over and power over the spiritual authorities, the demonic realm.

0:34.6

We're looking at Mark 5 and the famous story of the garrisoned man who's

0:39.9

filled with demons. And there's some really interesting things in this story about how Jesus

0:44.7

cast the demons into pigs who hurl themselves off of a cliff. We're in an interesting

0:51.8

region of the garrisonsines. And there's a lot going on here,

0:56.1

especially when we look at Jesus' ministry to the nations and to all people groups. And so I'm

1:02.2

very excited to share this sermon with you on Jesus healing the demoniac of garrasine.

1:10.4

So if you remember last week, Hayden preached on the calming of the storm

1:13.5

as Jesus crossed the sea of Galilee the storm broke out. Jesus spoke to the storm, drove out the

1:19.6

storm and things were calm and then they come across the sea to this place. I just want to remind you

1:26.2

of that because we're going to have to hop back and forth

1:28.3

between those stories in order to understand everything that's going on here in the story

1:33.3

that Adrian just read for us. Jesus has done the unthinkable. He's exercised a storm,

1:40.3

and now he's going to do something maybe even more unthinkable or just as crazy,

1:44.7

he's going to exercise a man of a legion of demons.

1:49.9

Exorcisms are somewhat normal in Mark's gospel and in all the gospels.

1:54.6

We've already seen some exorcisms in Mark's gospel,

1:57.6

and we're going to encounter several more,

1:59.9

but this particular story is very

2:03.9

unique because it is the longest and most detailed exorcism in all of Scripture.
