Summary

Talking points: truth, social media, relationships, men, culture Phew! Mark and I covered about a million things this episode, but that's what happens when you've been friends for over a decade. There's an overarching theme though: getting caught up in narratives, and how that actually fractures our ability to stay relational and kind to people. Dig in for this very wide-ranging conversation. Editor's note: while Adderall (dextroamphetamine) has some molecular similarity with methamphetamine, they are not the same. The attached methyl group—the "meth" part—lets the compound cross the blood-brain barrier very easily, last longer, and amps up how addictive it is. The "dextro" means the compound is arranged in a specific way so much lower doses can be used. (00:00:00) - Why men a seen as the problem in our current society, and how social media plays into that narrative (00:14:42) - Balancing our perception of what men and women each bring to the table (00:27:59) - How Mark approaches charged topics and binary thinking (00:43:07) - Dehumanizing is easier thanks to social media, and how to stay relational (00:58:06) - Acknowledging complexity, and intersubjective reality Mark Groves is the founder of Create The Love. 0:14.1

I miss the Man Talks, peeps.

0:15.9

You know what's funny is you and I could just shoot the shit forever.

0:18.9

We basically spent the last 20 minutes.

0:21.1

We were supposed to start 20 minutes ago and ended up just sort of like shooting the shit.

0:25.1

So it's awesome. We got to hit record. Otherwise you and I will just like catch up.

0:29.9

So that's kind of what I hope this conversation turns into is just two good friends having a

0:36.7

conversation that people can be a fly on the wall

0:40.4

for. Does that sound good? That sounds great. Let's start with why are men seen as the problem

0:46.5

in relationships in our current society. Oh, we're going right there. I like it. We're just going to

0:53.0

start right there because I see all

0:54.7

of this content. I see so much like TikTok videos and social media videos and it's like men are the bad

1:01.5

ones and do, da, da, men need to change and grow and all that kind of stuff. And so like, what's that

1:06.0

all about? Yeah, you know, I did this video where I said that your partner, if he's male, is not going to

1:12.7

want to change if you keep telling him that he's broken and he's a problem.

1:16.9

You know, if you keep telling him that masculinity is toxic, that da-da-da-da-da,

1:21.2

because no one changes when shame is the mechanism or the tool to try to engage change.

1:28.1

And so there's so many layers to it, but I'll say the first part is, as you very well know,

1:33.3

is that society teaches us that men are bad, that masculinity is toxic,
