Welcome to Nobody Told Me. I'm Laura Owens and I'm Jan Black. We all cringe when we see or hear of another mass shooting in the world because we all feel so helpless. We wonder whether anything

could have been done to prevent it and we worry about whether yet another mass shooting is on

the horizon. On this episode, we'll explore what can be done to prevent mass shootings.

And joining us is journalist Mark Folman, National Affairs Editor for Mother Jones and the author

of the new book called Trigger Points,

Inside the Mission to Stop Mass Shootings in America. His book is described as the first ever account

of a groundbreaking method for successfully preventing mass shootings. Mark, we thank you so much for

joining us. Thank you for having me. I'm glad to be here.

Tell us more about why you decided to write the book. Well, I had been looking into the problem

of mass shootings for quite a while, starting about a decade ago. And I think, you know,

like so many people, I quickly grew weary of the same sort of

political debates and all the thoughts and prayers we hear after each terrible attack. And I just

had the feeling that, you know, there really has to be more that we can do about this. And if so,

what is it? And I was investigating a bunch of these

cases trying to understand them better when I started hearing about an intervention method

called behavioral threat assessment. And it turns out this work has been going on for quite a long

time. It was first developed in the late 1980s. And, you know, I was hearing that there are quite a few potential attacks that had been

stopped.

And so that really caught my attention, wanted to know more about what that was all about.

Most of this work goes on behind the scenes.

It's becoming more known today as kind of an emerging solution to this rising

problem of mass shootings in our country. So I began to investigate it and just became really
