Summary

“Don’t talk about it, Be about it.” ~Even-Esh

“Let your actions speak so loudly, that I cannot hear your words.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Zach Even-Esh talks about how this manifests in a coaching environment with his athletes in the gym.

I like to use it not only to drive me forward with action, but to also help manage my expectations of others. It’s so often we are told one thing or another by someone who could either be trying to ‘sell’ you, has low or distorted self-awareness, is confused or no idea, etc. If we always put full stock in their words we are likely to be much less satisfied with any results.

Proof is in the effort of action. When someone tries to convince you they intend to do something or be something, nod and then observe. It’s the actions taking place (or that are absent) that will measure the true authenticity.

LESSONS:
Look for activity that you would expect to see if intent were pure
Train yourself with a do not say attitude
When someone is always telling you about what they are going to do, it’s more likely that it never will. Otherwise, it’d already be happening.

Hey Spartans, welcome back to Spartan Stand. I'm Brian Chantosh, and today I want to talk to you about letting your actions define your intent.

0:08.0

You know, a while ago now I was introduced to a quote that I cannot get out of my head

0:18.0

it's there all the time and it goes like this it's let your actions speak so loudly that I cannot hear your words.

0:27.0

And that quote is powerful and it may sound like a whole bunch of other other phrases that we've heard but Ralph Waldo Emerson really

0:33.8

captures that thing it makes you want to go back and read all of his writing but we've

0:38.4

heard talk is cheap talk doesn't pay the bills we've heard shut up or put up the latest one out there right now

0:45.8

is nobody cares work harder and and it's phenomenal it's all good stuff but I feel that

0:50.3

nothing speaks more powerfully than letting your action speak so loudly I cannot

0:56.2

hear your words.

0:57.4

And today I'm lucky to have Zach from The Spartan Way podcast, the host of the Spartan Way,

1:01.8

you guys know him, and I want to hear what you think about putting up or shutting up as it pertains to athletes and the sport and performance field that you're in.

1:10.5

Yeah, I love that quote and what's not so ironic is the first time I heard the

1:15.8

quote was when we held the first Spartan wrestling camp here and we interviewed

1:21.0

coach Rob Cole.

1:22.6

And he said that that quote was shared to him

1:26.2

by his father, who was a World War II vet,

1:29.4

who then went on to be an undefeated college wrestler. He said his dad shared that with him and then

1:34.8

our mutual good friend friend of Spartan Quattro Doos Chris Smith said the same thing

1:40.1

so it's interesting how that quote runs parallel and I've used kind of like spin-offs of that of like don't talk about it be about it.

1:49.0

But in today's day and age where we could post things on Instagram and social media and almost make it look like we're working.

1:58.8

I'm more of a fan of just show me.

2:01.6

Don't talk about it, be about it, and of course working with
