We start the day with a frustrating case of either or when we might have just as

easily gone and Barons at RBC Capital Analysts toerry Anani, issuing a note on Monday.

In it, he indicated that he thinks the $1 billion Apple is alleged to be spending on original

content over the next year will be about beating Spotify, not competing

with Netflix, Amazon Video, and the host of other video sources out there today.

Beren's Tharyanani, who has an outperform rating on Apple's stock and a $176 price target,

takes his cue the report last Wednesday by the Wall Street Journal's Trip Mikkel, stating that Apple has set a

budget of roughly $1 billion to procure and produce original content over the next year, citing

multiple unnamed sources.

So Daryanani buys the part where Apple is spending a billion dollars on content, but not on what that content will be, or maybe he just can't imagine it working

quoting the analyst while a billion dollars appears small relative to Netflix's six billion

Amazon's roughly four billion and HBO's 6 billion, Amazon's roughly 4 billion, and HBO's 2 billion dollar annual

content spend, we think that Apple is not competing with these services, at least not yet. Instead the investment makes more sense in our view from the perspective of Apple Music taking

share from Spotify.
