Summary

Jesus tells us to “love one another” as He has loved us, and that when we do, it will show the world that we are His disciples.  But how is love defined in the Bible?  And how are we to demonstrate this kind of love to others?  The world today defines love in a very different way.  It uses “love” as a cover for tolerating and accepting all kinds of sinful behavior, and if you object, you are labeled as unloving.  But true love reflects the love of the Lord as revealed in the Bible—sometimes it’s tough, sometimes tender; sometimes confronting, sometimes caring; sometimes challenging, sometimes encouraging.  Our job is to know Jesus so that we can show the love of Jesus to a world that needs to know His transforming love.

For today, we're John chapter 13. So if you'll turn there in your Bibles to John chapter 13.

0:06.7

And let me just get a running start with us so we can get up to speed where we are. And this might

0:12.8

be helpful for those of you who are new here to our Bible study. But John chapter 13 through

0:19.7

17 are known as the upper room discourse.

0:24.6

These five chapters are almost entirely in red, if you have a red letter edition of the

0:30.7

Bible, because a red letter edition of the Bible records the words of Jesus in red.

0:35.6

And the reason that these chapters are almost entirely in red is

0:39.0

because these chapters are almost entirely the words of Jesus in a private setting with his

0:45.7

disciples where he shares some final words with them just before he is crucified. So we have to

0:52.9

have this understanding of these chapters. It's a very

0:55.4

solemn time. He is a loan. He is ministering exclusively with the 12, and it'll soon be just the 11 in the

1:03.4

room. And so what are some of the most important things that Jesus would want to impart to his

1:09.5

disciples just before he's crucified.

1:11.7

That's what we're reading here.

1:13.9

Now, last time we were together, the first part of chapter 13, one of the first things

1:19.1

that Jesus does is he demonstrates servitude and he washes the feet of his disciples.

1:25.0

And then he says back in verse 15, he says, now I want you to follow my example,

1:29.3

I want you to do as I've done to you. And when he said that, he didn't mean I want you to start

1:34.0

to include foot washing as a regular ordinance of the church like water baptism or communion.

1:40.8

And the reason we can say that is because there's no other example in the New Testament where the early church ever practiced foot washing as part of a worship service.

1:50.5

So then what did he mean when he said, I want you to follow my example.

1:53.5

What he meant was, I want you to be servants.
