Summary

What will Heaven be like? How can we get there? Pastor Gary answers these two questions today’s study from John 14. Many people think that if they are good enough they will get to Heaven when they die, but then the question becomes, “How good is good enough?” Thankfully, Jesus died on a cross for our sins because He knew that we are not good enough—there is nothing we can do to earn or deserve Heaven. Yet Jesus opened Heaven wide through His sacrifice on the cross for all who would believe, and then He made a bold declaration that He is the only way to Heaven! Heaven is a choice. At the close of today’s teaching, Pastor Gary will help you to understand how to make that choice for Jesus so that you can go to Heaven when you die.

For today, we're here in John chapter 13 and 14.

0:04.1

For those of you who are new to our Bible study, John chapters 13 through 17 are typically

0:12.0

known as the upper room discourse because this is a lengthy conversation that Jesus has

0:19.7

in an unknown upper room of a home, somewhere in Jerusalem,

0:25.2

where he shares the last Passover meal with his disciples before he's crucified.

0:30.6

And in this intimate setting, just with the 12, and now Judas has exited, so now it's just with

0:37.0

the 11, Jesus shares some very personal things,

0:41.9

some very important things, just before his crucifixion.

0:46.4

And so in this private, rather intimate setting that he shares with his disciples over this last

0:52.0

Passover meal, there are some important things for us to

0:55.1

glean. Because as I've been saying, even though Jesus hand-selected 12 as his disciples,

1:01.5

disciple just means student or follower. And so in that sense, anyone who loves Jesus,

1:06.8

you're a follower of Jesus, you are his disciple, and you are his student. And thus, the things that

1:12.5

he says here between chapters 13 and 17 in these five chapters, by extension, he's saying to us.

1:19.1

So we should take note of these things. Now, we've already looked at the first part of chapter 13,

1:24.1

where Jesus teaches us to serve like he serves. He washed his disciples' feet. He wasn't

1:30.6

implementing a new ordinance of the church, but he was setting an example of servanthood.

1:35.7

And he's teaching us, I want you to serve like I serve. And then last week, we looked at the

1:40.6

latter part of chapter 13 where Jesus is teaching us to love like he loves.

1:45.8

Not as the world loves, not as the world has defined love and hijacked true love to, you know,

1:52.2

manipulate that term to just be whatever it wants for whoever.

1:56.1

But true love as Jesus personifies it that we should should do as he does, because Jesus says,
