Joseph Sternberg, member of the editorial board of the Wall Street Journal, writing political

economics.

He's in London, observing the conversations going on between Washington and Copenhagen, between

the Danish Prime Minister Friedrichson and the President of the United States about Greenland, which is to be administered by Denmark, has been for more than 100 years.

However, it is not part of the European defense mechanism. It is very much outside everybody's consideration until Mr. Trump comes along and

says, I need an Arctic base to counter the Russian building, an Arctic militant base. The Russians

are running military exercises in the Arctic zones as the passageways open up for the next century.

China is also participating in some fashion in the Arctic,

though it is not part of the Arctic nations. It claims it's near Arctic. All of this suggests

there's more to Greenland than just a plateau of ice. Again, this follows through with your

theme about your most recent column. Europe at first is horrified by Mr. Trump, then he wants him to go away, and then all of a

sudden they realize this is serious. America is serious about it, and they scramble for support.

I noticed that Prime Minister Friedrichson has the support of Emmanuel Macron maintained

sovereignty. But the rejoinder is immediately made.

Well, if you're so keen on sovereignty, what are you doing about Ukraine, which pretty much

stops the conversation in the EU?

How do you measure the European attention, the British attention for this Greenland spat?

Are they tossing it off or are they taking it seriously?

I think it's been fascinating to watch because at this late date, they still can't determine

how seriously to take it, which I mean, if we're perfectly honest, I can't tell how seriously

to take it either. So I'm sure the Danes are probably in good company with a lot of people who feel that way.
