I'm John Datsler. This is CBSi in the world and Joseph Sternberg

member of the editorial board of the Wall Street Journal lives in London and Joe also writes the

political economics for the editorial page but right now it's living in London

that's of interest to me because I I read London papers and I puzzle about this two people separated by a common

language and I want to understand the institutions that America reacted to and imitated or didn't in our creation and one of them is the government.

It's a different style of government. There's two major parties. They face each other every Wednesday. There's a lot of

Hemming and Howing and who's who-raze and the Prime Minister must answer for his

policies. The Prime Minister now, Mr Sunach, is answering for his ambition to reduce the net migration,

that is people arriving, people leaving, to reduce that to a quarter of a million by such and such a date. This has to do with the expected

general election and soon following through an a promise. However, I learn about all of the details about how the United

Kingdom sees migration and Joe the short version of this all is they're going to cut

out a program called graduate level visas for people to

come to study who were bringing in their families and then overstaying or

simply changing the rules and they're going to eliminate that. Is migration as

hot a topic as this makes it sound? People worry about it all the time. There's a lot of

talk here but I was unaware that London saw this as a major feature of the election campaign.

Yes immigration is going to be a major problem for Conservative Party Prime Minister

Rishi Sunak because immigration has just emerged as something that the public for better or worse is very concerned about.

And it's sort of strange as an American sitting here in London watching this because if they think

they've got problems they've got nothing like the problem in the US.

Although you do have quite a lot of very dangerous illegal immigration coming in across the English channel, which they do need to deal with.

I think the bigger problem is that they've gone down this road to promising that they're going to limit the numbers and then that means that you have to reach for any available mechanism of doing it.
