Years ago, I worked at the Federal Communications Commission and I had a terrific boss,

Reed Hunt. And if you've listened to the podcast Radical Cander that's hosted by Kim Scott,

I know Kim because we both worked for Reed Hunt. And Reed was a very interesting guy to work for.

And one of the things that he did that has always stuck with me is that he often quoted this line

from Benjamin Franklin. And to understand the meaning of this line, you have to know that the

word deer is an old fashioned word for costly. Because when something would go wrong,

or when there would be a problem that we were all fussing about, he would quote,

experience keeps a deer school, but fools will learn in no other. I quote this line to myself

all of that time. Experience keeps a deer school, but fools will learn in no other. And I find

it immensely comforting because when I make a mistake, or I screw up, or something goes wrong,

I just think, well, you know what, it's true. Experience is a great teacher, a tough teacher,

but a great teacher. Experience keeps a deer school, but fools will learn in no other.
