Summary

Listening and discerning what God is saying is one of the most important areas of discipleship for any Christian. This especially applies to leaders. When we listen wrongly, the ripple effect is far-reaching. In Matthew 17, we observe Peter in a hurry to advise Jesus. He attempts to do the right thing for Jesus, but instead of waiting and listening, he is too eager to make plans. God the Father rebukes him and calls him to right listening, a listening that allows the word of Jesus to do its full work and create a relaxed, un-frenetic obedience in and through him.

0:10.9	So today we have a great treat for you.
0:13.6	I'm going to share with you from a message from Matthew chapter 17 called Listen.
0:20.7	It's a story of Peter, James, and John being invited by Jesus to the Mount of Transfiguration
0:26.1	and where Jesus is transfigured before him.
0:30.2	And, you know, it's an incredible moment there on that mountaintop.
0:34.4	And Peter begins to make plans.
0:36.5	And Peter's always in a hurry, much like us, to advise
0:39.1	Jesus, and he wants to build three booths. And Peter's trying to do the right thing. He interrupts
0:44.9	Moses, the Lodge, and Jesus is having this conversation. But instead of waiting and listening
0:50.7	to Jesus, he's making a speech, he's making plans. And then, you know, God
0:57.0	the Father speaks from heaven and from a cloud and says, this is my son whom I love, with whom I'm well
1:01.4	pleased. Listen to him. It's the climax of the text. And what God says is that he wants Peter as a leader,
1:09.6	he wants us as leaders, to fear and reverence the son,
1:13.9	to listen to Jesus more than any other person on earth, more than any other project on
1:18.6	earth, more than any other program on earth, and more than any other cause in the world.
1:23.0	There is nothing that comes close to its importance of listening to what is Jesus saying and learning to discern what he's saying and how he's coming to us.
1:36.5	Friends, that is perhaps the most or one of the most important learnings for all of us as leaders.
