Hi everyone. Welcome to episode 95 of the Let's Talk yoga podcast. I hope you are doing well. In this episode, I want to do a deep dive into yoga and menstruation. And I will be referring to women in this episode. But know that when I am referring to women, I'm referring

0:22.0

to anyone who refers to themselves as a woman or are Valva owners. Okay. And this is a topic

0:28.8

that I have been passionate about for a while. I just haven't brought it up on the podcast,

0:33.8

but it's something I have taught for many years at the studio and have had conversation with a lot of women,

0:39.8

especially a lot of Indian and other South Asian women who are clients of mine at my yoga studio as well as the dance studio.

0:47.3

It's an area of interest, women's health in general, because growing up I did see my mom struggle with health issues most of her life and a lot of other people.

0:57.2

So I always grew up wanting to do anything and everything I could to work on my health and wellness.

1:05.3

And in many ways her struggle became my strength.

1:08.2

So in today's episode, I want to talk about menstruation, especially in India,

1:13.8

and how it has deep cultural significance, especially in the southern part of India where I'm from,

1:20.1

and the impact of this in terms of yoga and the history of it. And I want to get into questions

1:26.6

about how to practice if you're on your

1:28.2

period. It's a question I get so often from only my Indian clientele or my South Asian clients.

1:34.7

It's not something the average Western yoga practitioner walks into a studio and asks me about,

1:40.7

but a lot of Indian women ask me this question. So while I know I have listeners from

1:46.9

all parts of the world for this podcast, this will be very relevant to any South Asian listeners,

1:53.1

okay, who have clients who ask them the same questions. Okay. So even though you might have not

1:58.2

paid much attention to this in Western yoga or even in the fitness world, I'm going to be giving you some history, some context, some cultural elements in it, and then talking about what type of practice we should be doing when you're on your period, what you should be avoiding, and what you can do if you have like a heavy flow. We'll talk about

2:18.7

PMS a little bit between cycles, how to practice. And then just so much more. Okay, I'll talk about

2:24.4

menopause and how to address this with your students and all of that in today's episode. So I hope

2:30.8

you find this interesting or at least intriguing.

2:41.6

And before we get to the conversation itself, we're slowly inching towards our 100th episode mark.
