Well, howdy there, Internet people, it's Bell again.

So today, we're going to talk about Texas, Commandments, and taking it seriously.

A Republican bill designed to require the Ten Commandments in every public school classroom

moved closer to passing yesterday, and it's currently scheduled for a final vote today,

Sunday. I know a lot of states are pursuing similar legislation, but everything's bigger in Texas,

right? Including the abject hypocrisy and absence of irony. I'm not sure I've ever seen a display in support of the Ten Commandments

that mocks the Constitution and the commandments at the same time to quite this degree.

If you ever wondered whether it was performative nonsense or whether the legislators really cared

about following the Ten Commandments, or the Constitution for that matter.

This is the moment for you.

Allow me to quickly take you through the first and fourth, real quick.

The First Amendment, quote,

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise

thereof, or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people

peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

Notice, there's two parts to religious freedom here.

Free exercise. That's you being allowed to practice your religion. And then there's the

establishment clause. That prevents the government from showing favoritism toward a religion or

religions by hypothetically doing things like requiring

the religious texts to be hung on walls in schools. Now, let's go over the fourth. That's

unreasonable seizure. I mean the Fourth Commandment, or maybe fifth depending. Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy.

They voted to give preliminary approval to force the text with this guidance in it on Saturday.
