Musk is offering huge cash payouts to sign a petition.

And there's been a lot of questions about whether or not it's allowed.

Musk is saying he's giving away $1 million a day to voters for signing a political action

committee's petition.

A lot of experts are raising red flags over some specific parts of the offer.

The short version is that most experts say that offering money to sign a petition is probably not a great idea, but it may not necessarily

violate the law. However, if the cash handout requires the person register to vote or be registered, it might.

Rick Hasen, a UCLA law school professor, said, quote, if all he was doing was paying people to sign the petition, that might be a waste of money, but there's nothing illegal about it.

He continued, quote, the problem is that the only people eligible to participate in this giveaway are the people who are registered to vote and that makes it illegal.

Derek Mueller, who teaches at Notre Dame Law School and is an election

law expert, said quote, when you start limiting prizes or giveaways to only registered voters or only people who have voted.

That's where bribery concerns arise.

He added that doing so would make it look like you're giving cash for voter registration.

The list of experts with similar opinions can be found on just about every news outlet talking about this.

Another issue is that reporting suggests that cash is only available to people in specific states.
