This is sort of a special episode, this episode and the next episode because we're getting

into the holiday so there'll be no news in this episode but Brittany, Clinton, Sam are

incredible and continue to help us push the way that we think about this world every single

Now on this episode we have Piper Kerman who wrote Warranty's New Black.

The seasons and jails in America are built very intentionally to be harsh, difficult

places to live.

They are built very intentionally to be traumatizing places.

We also have Georgia Lerner, the ED of the Women's Prison Association.

We also join by Tracy Fields, talk to us about foster care.

What we see is that when there's a problem in child welfare, a horrible incident occurs,

everyone wants to make sure there's enough case workers and make sure there's enough

placements and make sure there's enough foster families.

But then what happens is over time, legislators, commissioners, whatever, lose interest and

they start nickel and dime in the agency so that you get fewer case workers, worse supervision,

lots of turnover and the expertise that was once there just sort of fades away and the

service is fade and everybody forgets what good practice is because they're so overstressed

with limited resources.

And then we got to start all over again.

So the work for this week is about having tough conversations.
