Summary

Today on the podcast is Grace Hartman!

Grace most recently placed 5th at the 2024 NCAA XC Championships held last month in Madison, Wisconsin. Grace is also a 4xNCAA Track and Field All-American, a 1x NCAA Cross Country All-American, a 2024 5000M Track and Field Olympic Trials Competitor, the 2024 Cross Country ACC Individual Champion, and the 2024 ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Back in high school, Grace was the 2xGatorade Ohio Player of the Year (Cross Country 2020, 2021) and an 8xOHSAA (Ohio) State Champion.

Grace has run 4:13 (1500m), 15:27 5k, 32:28 (10k), and 19:15 (6k on grass).

In today's conversation, you can hear all about how Grace went from placing 63rd at the 2023 National Championships to 5th just one short year later, how she handles setbacks, her years dominating Ohio running in high school, how her ambitions have changed with her recent success, lessons from Coach Henes, and much more.

I was in HS at the same time as Grace in OH and she was always a household name so it was such a fun time getting to chop it up with her and go through her success and mindsets.

There was a lot of worried that, like, my first week back training, I genuinely, like, could not run a mile without stopping, which, like, I know everybody gets out of shape, but, like, it was kind of terrifying.

I was telling coach, I'm like, like, the love of the sport is not there right now. Like, this summer was just such a mess. I was so stressed out all the time,

0:22.5

which was really disappointing.

And then, you know, I think doing that race with her,

0:27.1

kind of, like, it brought the fun back.

0:29.1

And after that, like, a switch kind of flipped,

0:31.5

and suddenly things started to, like, roll a little bit better.

0:34.2

And just throughout the season, I feel like,

0:35.6

just my team is a whole kind of gained momentum.

That's Grace Hartman today on the Running Effect podcast. I'm your host Dominic Schleader,

0:45.9

and I'm thrilled. You've clicked on this one. Grace is someone that I've followed her career

0:50.4

for quite some time. We're both from the great state of Ohio. I want to say my junior

0:54.9

year making the state meet was her senior year. She won many, many state titles as an Ohioan.

1:00.6

I want to say she won eight state titles. She was also back-to-back Gatorade State player of the

1:05.4

year in cross-country, if I'm not mistaken, 2020 and 2021. Grace now runs for and competes for NC State, the Wolfpack,

1:12.9

and she recently plays fifth at the 2024 NCAA cross-country championships held last month in

1:18.3

Madison, Wisconsin. I think what's most notable about that is last year she placed 63rd,

1:23.1

so quite the jump, and I assumed that jump would have been because of massive leaps in training

1:28.6

or something of the like, but she actually details and documents how she had a pretty

1:33.2

rough summer and even rough start to the season with some different struggles and setbacks.

1:37.7

And I thoroughly found value from hearing about how she approaches setbacks, how she views

1:42.9

her growth in the sport, how you guys can grow
