Sondre Guttormsen not only cleared six meters, but he launched past expectations, limits, and borders, and is considered one of the best to ever do it in the world of pole vault. He's a European champion, a two-time Olympian, a three-time NCAA champion, and one of the elite few in pole vault's six-meter club. In 2023, he made history as the first-ever Norwegian to win the European Indoor Championships, clearing 5.80 m with zero misses. Two years later, he backed it up with a bronze medal at the 2025 European Indoors, going even higher at 5.90 m. In the NCAA, he collected three titles (indoor champion in 2022 and 2023, and outdoor champ in 2022). In March 2023, he tied the collegiate indoor record at 6.00 m, joining the sport's most exclusive club. He's competed on the biggest stage as well: a two-time Olympian, reaching the final in Paris 2024 and finishing 8th. But that's just the surface. He's been through his share of adversity on the way to the top. Fresh off that European gold, he flew 11,000 miles across time zones on no rest, and still tied the NCAA indoor record. At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, he suffered a quad injury during qualification, missing out on the final. Four years later, he came back stronger to make the final in Paris. And now, toeing the line with the best in the world, Simeon Birnbaum is bridging the levels in a way few athletes do. In his return to the show, we catch up with Simeon just 24 hours after his electric 3:56.64 mile at the Prefontaine Classic—his first real taste of pro racing on one of the sport's biggest stages. Paityn Noe has gone from being an injury-plagued freshman to one of the NCAA's most electrifying distance runners, redefining success with speed, resilience, and purpose. Andreas Almgren went from nearly quitting the sport to redefining European distance running. The Swedish phenom’s career began with a 1:45.59 in the 800m before a cascade of devastating injuries nearly ended it all. We’re talking stress fractures, torn muscles, and years of physical setbacks that forced Andreas to rethink everything, from his training philosophy to his identity as an athlete. Today’s guest knows endurance—on the trail, in public service, and in life. Congressman Mark DeSaulnier of California has run 23 marathons, including Boston, New York, Napa, and even Paris. A former lacrosse player turned lifelong runner, Mark once pursued a sub-3-hour marathon while simultaneously trying to bench press twice his bodyweight. He came heartbreakingly close—twice clocking a 3:04—and carried that same grit with him into politics, business, and recovery from a life-threatening illness. In March 2020, Mark fell during a run in D.C. and sustained broken ribs. What followed was a terrifying cascade: a damaged spleen, undiagnosed pneumonia, organ failure, and five weeks in the ICU—four of them on a ventilator. His odds of survival? Just 10 percent; one doctor told his sons he wouldn’t make it. But he beat them. Now serving in his 11th year in Congress, Rep. DeSaulnier brings that same sense of perseverance to his work on transportation, education, and mental health. He currently serves as Ranking Member of the House Ethics Committeeand is a senior member of the Education & the Workforce Committee. But this episode isn’t about politics. Quentin Nauman—remember that name. Just a few weeks ago, he became the first high school athlete in U.S. history to run both sub-1:50 in the 800m and sub-4:00 in the 1600m... at the same meet. (Quentin clocked 1:49.41 in the 800m and 3:59.60 in the 1600m at the Iowa State Track and Field Championships.) Let that sink in. From sweeping the Drake Relays to dominating cross country with a 14:59 course record, Quentin has built a résumé that rivals the legends—and he’s still not done. This next week, he heads to the HOKA Festival of Miles, not just to compete—but to win. In April 2025, Nauman achieved a rare trifecta by winning the 800m, 1,600m, and 3,200m races at the prestigious Drake Relays. He became the first Iowa high school boy to sweep all three distance events in the same weekend, setting a state record of 4:05.17 in the 1,600m. Quentin’s prowess isn't limited to track. In November 2024, he won the Class 3A Iowa state cross country title with a state record time of 14:59. From a late start in high school track to becoming one of the fastest milers in NCAA history, today’s guest has rewritten the blueprint for distance running success. Gary Martin’s rise has been nothing short of electric. After a quiet freshman year at the University of Virginia, he exploded onto the national scene during the 2024 cross country season—capturing the ACC Championship with a course record and finishing 13th at nationals to earn All-American honors. But that was just the beginning. On the track, Gary has been rewriting record books: a 7:36 meet-record win in the 3000m at ACC Indoors, a Virginia school record in the 5000m, and a 3:48 mile at the 2025 Millrose Games—the second-fastest indoor mile in NCAA history. He didn’t stop there, anchoring UVA’s distance medley relay team to an NCAA-record time of 9:14. And long before college glory, Gary made headlines as a Pennsylvania high schooler when he ran 3:57.98 without a pacer—becoming the first from his state and just the 14th U.S. high schooler ever to break four minutes. With PRs of 3:33 in the 1500m, 3:48 in the mile, 7:36 in the 3K, and 13:16 in the 5K, Gary’s resume is as fast as it is fearless. Margot Appleton has emerged as one of the premier collegiate distance runners in the U.S., blending tactical brilliance, relentless drive, and a flair for dramatic finishes. In 2019, as a high school junior, Appleton stunned the field at Boston's Mayor's Cup 5K, finishing second overall in 17:14—outpacing the reigning Foot Locker national champion. This performance marked a significant breakthrough in her running career. Most recently, at the 2025 Penn Relays, Appleton delivered a sensational anchor leg in the Distance Medley Relay (DMR), clocking a 4:21.46 split. Overcoming a significant deficit, she surged past top competitors to secure Virginia's first women's DMR win at the event since 1982. Her 1500m time of 4:05.68 at the 2025 Raleigh Relays ranks as the fourth-fastest in collegiate history. Appleton holds Virginia school records in the indoor mile (4:25.03), indoor 3000m (8:46.23), and outdoor 5000m (15:18.21). Appleton has earned First Team All-American honors in both the 1500m and 5000m events, including a 4th-place finish in the 5000m at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Championships. From cross country and track star to talent management guru -- Matthew Sonnenfeldt has seen it all. Matthew’s journey from high school champion to collegiate athlete and now a mentor and representative for other athletes illustrates a career built on passion, resilience, and a commitment to excellence in track and field. At Knoxville West High School, Matthew captured the Tennessee state cross country championship in 2008, including a 14:50 5000m at the Foot Locker South Regional, earning him a spot at the Foot Locker Nationals. Matthew began his collegiate running at the University of Kentucky, where he earned All-SEC Freshman Team honors in cross country in 2009. He then transferred to North Carolina State University, where he earned All-ACC honors in 2012 and All-NCAA Southeast Region honors in both 2011 and 2012. He has PRs of 3:52.74 in the 1500m, 13:59.10 in the 5000m, 29:51.52 in the 10,000m, and 1:07:57 in the half marathon. After his competitive running career, Sonnenfeldt became a track agent with Flynn Sports Management, where he supports and represents elite track and field athletes. Today’s guest needs no introduction—but he definitely earned a new one. Olin Hacker is back—and this time, he's bringing a U.S. title with him. Just weeks ago, Olin stormed to victory at the USATF 5000m Championships in Indianapolis, running 13:32 to claim his first national crown. But this moment wasn’t built in a month—it was years in the making. As a collegiate runner, Olin secured multiple Big Ten championships while running for Wisconsin in 2022, winning both the indoor 3000m and 5000m events, as well as the outdoor 5000m. The highlight came in 2022 at the Oregon Relays, where he shattered the meet record in the 5000m, clocking 13:19.34 and improving his personal best by 16 seconds. The rise continued, as Olin represented the U.S. at the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships, finishing fifth in the 3000m with a season-best of 7:45.4. The Wisconsin Badger alum owns impressive PRs of 13:08.76 in the 5000m, 7:38.10 in the 3000m, and 3:56.59 in the mile. He took advantage of an extra year of eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic, returning for a seventh year, and claiming an NCAA 5000m victory. What does it take to break one of the most iconic barriers in sports history? Brad Wilkins, lead scientist on Nike’s Breaking2 project, joins the show to pull back the curtain on the science, strategy, and soul behind chasing the sub-two-hour marathon. Dr. Wilkins currently serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Human Physiology at the University of Oregon. He is the Director of the Oregon Performance Research Laboratory (OPRL); his research focuses on the physiological limits of human performance. Dr. Wilkins explores thermoregulation, neural control of the cardiovascular system, the impact of product interventions on performance outcomes–just to name a few. The work he has done in this field has led to over 40 published manuscripts and patents. Dr. Wilkins received his Ph.D. from the University of Oregon and has also worked at the Mayo Clinic. He has been an accomplished scientist at Nike for 10 years now, and led the scientific team for the Breaking2 project, where he was instrumental in coordinating the various scientific disciplines involved in the project. For TJ Hansen, running isn’t just a passion — it’s the job. And business is booming. Up next in our 2025 HOKA Festival of Miles series, we welcome the Michigan standout who’s made a national name for himself on both grass and track. Representing Freeland High School, TJ is a two-time Nike All-American and finished runner-up at the 2024 Nike Cross Nationals, crossing the line in 15:30.60 — just 2.5 seconds off the win. That followed a top-10 finish at NXN in 2023. TJ also claimed the Gatorade Michigan Boys Cross Country Player of the Year title for 2024–25 and double-won at the Michigan Division 2 state meet in both the 1600m and 3200m. His PRs show he’s got range and firepower: he has run 1:54.27 in the 800m; 3:47.05 in the 1500m; 4:03.87 in the mile; 8:51.12 in the two-mile; and 14:24.40 in the 5,000m. Originally committed to Tennessee, TJ made a game-time decision to head west — he’s now bound for the University of Colorado, joining one of the deepest distance squads in the NCAA. As Keegan Smith is apt to say, winning isn’t everything – running your best is. Up next in our 2025 HOKA Festival of Miles series, we welcome one of the most dominant high school distance runners in the country: Keegan Smith, straight out of Tennessee. From the moment he laced up as a freshman, Keegan’s been smashing records and turning heads. He opened his high school career by dropping a 14:53.79 5K — the fastest ever by a U.S. freshman in cross country — then lit up the track with a 4:14.63 mile and an 8:52.96 3,200m, both national freshman records. Fast forward to his senior year: Keegan clocked a blistering 14:23.26 at the Nike Cross Southeast Regional, breaking the Tennessee state record and proving he's still leveling up. He closed out his high school XC career with wins at NXR Southeast and Foot Locker South, and shattered three all-time course records along the way. The creative force behind Litoff Studios, Mr. Zach Litoff himself, joins the show today, ready to discuss his new book. Zach seamlessly intertwines athleticism and artistry–blending his elite athletic background as an NCAA Championship steeplechaser with his innovative design work; this has led him to work with major brands like Nike, New Balance, and even Apple. Recently, he led the rebranding of the iconic Bay to Breakers race for their website, infusing it with fresh, modern visuals while honoring its rich history. Zach grew up in Boulder, Colorado, where he became enmeshed at an early age with drawing, climbing and running. At Monarch High School in Colorado he came in third in the state two-mile championships, third in the mile, and fifth in the 800m. At Santa Clara University he helped build a strong program, finishing as an All-American steeplechaser with PRs of 8:32 in the steeple and 13:52 in the 5,000m. Zach went back to Santa Clara and got his Master's in Marketing, and has since started his own company doing design work, marketing, photography, video production, web design, content creation and blog creation. Episode 1 of The Call Room: Road to Records is here, featuring New Mexico's fastest miler and ascending star, Corbin Coombs. Corbin, a senior at Organ Mountain High School in Las Cruces, New Mexico, is gearing up for one of the biggest events of the calendar year, the 2025 HOKA Festival of MIles coming to you June 5. He came in 8th last year in the boyschampionship mile. In February, Corbin set a new state record by running a 4:02.59 mile at the Millrose Games in New York City, breaking a 21-year-old New Mexico record. Corbin, who is affiliated with the Sun Dragons Track Club, continued to make a name for himself at the 2025 Nike Indoor Nationals. On Friday at the two-mile championship race he came in second with a time of 8:45.88. Later that day, he was the anchor on his team's DMR victory: the group ran a 10:06.09, securing the fourth-fastest high school time this year. Then onSunday, he competed in the boys' mile championship and came in fourth with a time of 4:08.98. Then on March 1 at the Circuit: Philadelphia, Corbin ran a new mile personal best of 4:01.62. Corbin has additional PRs of 1:52.19 in the 800m indoor; 3:45.21 in the 1500m indoor; and 14:30.06 in the 5,000m for cross country. Corbin was the 2023 Gatorade New Mexico Boys Track & Field Player of the Year. High school mid-distance sensation Cole Boone joins us today, fresh off two monumental performances in March that have solidified him as a national champion.Cole, a junior at Pulaski County High School in Dublin, Virginia, has been crushing the 2025 campaign so far. The bar is set high for his senior campaign next fall.On March 4 at the Virginia High School League Class 3 State Indoor Championships held at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Cole set a new national high school indoor record in the 1,000m with a time of 2:20.14.Cole then competed in the New Balance Nationals Indoor meet in Boston, where he delivered an impressive 1:48.29 in the 800m to win the championship and claim his first national title as a junior. The journey of Jackson Heidesch is one of unbridled honesty and crushing heartbreak. From high school standout to oft-injured Duke student-athlete, Jackson Heidesch has been forced to deal with more than just physical maladies. It's been 18 months of toil, rehab and bouts of depression for the Iowa native, who is now opening up about his mental health struggles. Jackson will be taking a designated pause from the NCAA to redshirt the entire indoor and outdoor season. Although he's been through ringer in his short running career, he seems to be setting the stage for a resurgence on and off the track and grass. Jackson's hardships since agreeing to run for Duke include a couple of grade 4 stress fractures; mono, and the aforementioned depression. With a combination of family support and talk therapy, in addition to physical therapy work–Jackson has come out the other side of this dark tunnel ready to get back to logging miles and competing with the best in the country. Jackson was the 2022-23 Gatorade Boys Cross Country Player of the Year for Iowa, where he broke the 4 minute mile barrier to break the state record, running a 3:59.08 at the HOKA Festival of Miles. That year he also swept the 1600m and 3200m titles at the state meet, running a 4:07.28 and a 9:08.86, respectively. Villanova's Liam Murphy is quickly etching his name into the record books. Fresh off shattering the NCAA 1500m record with a blistering 3:33.02 at the Raleigh Relays, Liam joins the show today to discuss his recent run of success on the track. Since December, Liam has set school records in the 3,000m (with a time of 7:35.47) and the 5,000m (with a time of 13:10.42) in addition to being a key cog on the school’s relay teams. The Millstone, New Jersey, native’s records and achievements could fill a small tome–in addition to the 3,000 and 5,000m school records he also holds the Villanova indoor mile record (3:53.85) and was a member of the 4x1 mile relay team that ran a 15:51.91 at the 2024 Penn Relays, which today stands as the second-fastest outdoor mile relay time in the world. At the NCAA Division 1 Indoor Championships in May, Liam came in fourth in the 3,000m and 11th in the 5,000m. At Allentown High School, Liam was the Gatorade New Jersey Boys Cross Country Player of the Year and Boys Track & Field Player of the Year in 2019-20; in addition to winning the 3200m title at the Indoor Meet of Champions in 2019. Liam’s trajectory to success was crystal clear even in high school, where he ran personal bests of 4:11 in the 1600m and 8:54 in the 3200m. Registered Dietitian and running coach Cortney Berling joins the show to cut through the noise of diet culture and teach us how to fuel smart for long-term running success. As Cortney likes to say, “you don't have to be thin to win.” She herself is no slouch on the roads: she has PRs of 17:10 in the 5k, 1:19.19 in the half marathon, and 2:57 in the marathon. Personal challenges have not dimmed the force that is Sam Gilman. A former Air Force Academy distance star, Sam came into the New Year with a blast, securing bronze at the USA Indoor Track & Field Championships in February with a time of 7:38.64 in the 3,000m. Sam followed that up with a 7:34.69 on March 2 at Boston University, a new PR for the distance. Sam has additional PRs of 13:15.58 in the 5k, 3:35.40 in the 1500m, 3:52.81 in the mile, and 1:52.50 in the 800m. Sam’s impressive start to the New Year earned him a spot on Team USA for the USATF Indoor Championships in China; he clocked a 7:47.19, and was 0.1 seconds shy of a podium finish, claiming fourth in the 3,000m. Sam was a two-time All-American at Air Force; he finished 5th in the 2022 NCAA outdoor 5K championship and 6th in the 2021 NCAA XC Championship. He graduated in 2023, and is currently heading out to Utah to train with Grant Fisher and his well-respected coach, Mike Scannell. Sam went to Hilton Head High School in South Carolina, where he accounted for two state titles in the 1600m, and one in the 800m and 3200m. He also set a South Carolina state record in the mile with a time of 4:06.50. US Indoor 800m Champion Nia Akins joins the show after kicking off the year in impressive fashion, claiming an indoor title and proving that she's back and better than ever. Nia won the USATF 800m Indoor title with a time of 1:59.31 in New York in February. She then followed that up by advancing to the semifinals in the Indoor Championships in China in March. Despite a fall in the semis, she still finished strong in 2:04.38 and barely missed the finals. Nia, a native of San Diego, California, ran for the University of Pennsylvania, where she had PRs of 55.38 in the 400m;2:00.71 in the 800m; and 2:43.92 in the 1,000m. During her time there she was a two-time 800m runner-up. She also won a silver medal at the 2019 NACAC U23 Championships. Nia began her post-collegiate career in 2020 after running the second-fastest 800m time in NCAA history. Nia won the 800m US Olympic Trials in Oregon in 2024, where she ran a career PR of 1:57.36; she ended up reaching the semi-finalsin the 800m during the Paris Olympics. Previously of the Brooks Beast Track Club, Nia is now representing HOKA. Nia has an artistic side as well, and enjoys recording music in her down time.
