She’s been lighting it up solo, too—dropping 8:40.89 in the 3000m at the Husky Classic, the second-fastest time in the NCAA this year, and earning Second-Team All-American honors indoors. What does it take to break one of the most iconic barriers in sports history? Brad Wilkins, lead scientist on Nike’s Breaking2 project, joins the show to pull back the curtain on the science, strategy, and soul behind chasing the sub-two-hour marathon. Dr. Wilkins currently serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Human Physiology at the University of Oregon. He is the Director of the Oregon Performance Research Laboratory (OPRL); his research focuses on the physiological limits of human performance. Dr. Wilkins explores thermoregulation, neural control of the cardiovascular system, the impact of product interventions on performance outcomes–just to name a few. The work he has done in this field has led to over 40 published manuscripts and patents. Dr. Wilkins received his Ph.D. from the University of Oregon and has also worked at the Mayo Clinic. He has been an accomplished scientist at Nike for 10 years now, and led the scientific team for the Breaking2 project, where he was instrumental in coordinating the various scientific disciplines involved in the project. For TJ Hansen, running isn’t just a passion — it’s the job. And business is booming. TJ also claimed the Gatorade Michigan Boys Cross Country Player of the Year title for 2024–25 and double-won at the Michigan Division 2 state meet in both the 1600m and 3200m. His PRs show he’s got range and firepower: he has run 1:54.27 in the 800m; 3:47.05 in the 1500m; 4:03.87 in the mile; 8:51.12 in the two-mile; and 14:24.40 in the 5,000m. As Keegan Smith is apt to say, winning isn’t everything – running your best is. Up next in our 2025 HOKA Festival of Miles series, we welcome one of the most dominant high school distance runners in the country: Keegan Smith, straight out of Tennessee. From the moment he laced up as a freshman, Keegan’s been smashing records and turning heads. He opened his high school career by dropping a 14:53.79 5K — the fastest ever by a U.S. freshman in cross country — then lit up the track with a 4:14.63 mile and an 8:52.96 3,200m, both national freshman records. Fast forward to his senior year: Keegan clocked a blistering 14:23.26 at the Nike Cross Southeast Regional, breaking the Tennessee state record and proving he's still leveling up. He closed out his high school XC career with wins at NXR Southeast and Foot Locker South, and shattered three all-time course records along the way. His PRs speak for themselves: he has run 1:51.93 in 800m; 3:55.64 in the 1500m; 4:11.90 in the mile; 8:54.97 in the two-mile; and 14:23.26 in the 5,000m in cross country. The longer the race, the stronger he gets. Now committed to the University of Colorado, Keegan’s taking his talent to one of the top distance programs in the nation. The creative force behind Litoff Studios, Mr. Zach Litoff himself, joins the show today, ready to discuss his new book. Zach seamlessly intertwines athleticism and artistry–blending his elite athletic background as an NCAA Championship steeplechaser with his innovative design work; this has led him to work with major brands like Nike, New Balance, and even Apple. Recently, he led the rebranding of the iconic Bay to Breakers race for their website, infusing it with fresh, modern visuals while honoring its rich history. Zach grew up in Boulder, Colorado, where he became enmeshed at an early age with drawing, climbing and running. At Monarch High School in Colorado he came in third in the state two-mile championships, third in the mile, and fifth in the 800m. At Santa Clara University he helped build a strong program, finishing as an All-American steeplechaser with PRs of 8:32 in the steeple and 13:52 in the 5,000m. Zach went back to Santa Clara and got his Master's in Marketing, and has since started his own company doing design work, marketing, photography, video production, web design, content creation and blog creation. Whew! Zach's latest triumph is a 160-page multimedia art book called "The Last Olympic Trials," which documents his experience at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials in Eugene. Episode 1 of The Call Room: Road to Records is here, featuring New Mexico's fastest miler and ascending star, Corbin Coombs. Corbin, a senior at Organ Mountain High School in Las Cruces, New Mexico, is gearing up for one of the biggest events of the calendar year, the 2025 HOKA Festival of MIles coming to you June 5. He came in 8th last year in the boyschampionship mile. In February, Corbin set a new state record by running a 4:02.59 mile at the Millrose Games in New York City, breaking a 21-year-old New Mexico record. Corbin, who is affiliated with the Sun Dragons Track Club, continued to make a name for himself at the 2025 Nike Indoor Nationals. On Friday at the two-mile championship race he came in second with a time of 8:45.88. Later that day, he was the anchor on his team's DMR victory: the group ran a 10:06.09, securing the fourth-fastest high school time this year. Then onSunday, he competed in the boys' mile championship and came in fourth with a time of 4:08.98. Then on March 1 at the Circuit: Philadelphia, Corbin ran a new mile personal best of 4:01.62. Corbin has additional PRs of 1:52.19 in the 800m indoor; 3:45.21 in the 1500m indoor; and 14:30.06 in the 5,000m for cross country. Corbin was the 2023 Gatorade New Mexico Boys Track & Field Player of the Year. High school mid-distance sensation Cole Boone joins us today, fresh off two monumental performances in March that have solidified him as a national champion.Cole, a junior at Pulaski County High School in Dublin, Virginia, has been crushing the 2025 campaign so far. The bar is set high for his senior campaign next fall.On March 4 at the Virginia High School League Class 3 State Indoor Championships held at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Cole set a new national high school indoor record in the 1,000m with a time of 2:20.14.Cole then competed in the New Balance Nationals Indoor meet in Boston, where he delivered an impressive 1:48.29 in the 800m to win the championship and claim his first national title as a junior. The journey of Jackson Heidesch is one of unbridled honesty and crushing heartbreak. From high school standout to oft-injured Duke student-athlete, Jackson Heidesch has been forced to deal with more than just physical maladies. It's been 18 months of toil, rehab and bouts of depression for the Iowa native, who is now opening up about his mental health struggles. Jackson will be taking a designated pause from the NCAA to redshirt the entire indoor and outdoor season. Although he's been through ringer in his short running career, he seems to be setting the stage for a resurgence on and off the track and grass. Jackson's hardships since agreeing to run for Duke include a couple of grade 4 stress fractures; mono, and the aforementioned depression. With a combination of family support and talk therapy, in addition to physical therapy work–Jackson has come out the other side of this dark tunnel ready to get back to logging miles and competing with the best in the country. Jackson was the 2022-23 Gatorade Boys Cross Country Player of the Year for Iowa, where he broke the 4 minute mile barrier to break the state record, running a 3:59.08 at the HOKA Festival of Miles. That year he also swept the 1600m and 3200m titles at the state meet, running a 4:07.28 and a 9:08.86, respectively. Villanova's Liam Murphy is quickly etching his name into the record books. Fresh off shattering the NCAA 1500m record with a blistering 3:33.02 at the Raleigh Relays, Liam joins the show today to discuss his recent run of success on the track. Since December, Liam has set school records in the 3,000m (with a time of 7:35.47) and the 5,000m (with a time of 13:10.42) in addition to being a key cog on the school’s relay teams. The Millstone, New Jersey, native’s records and achievements could fill a small tome–in addition to the 3,000 and 5,000m school records he also holds the Villanova indoor mile record (3:53.85) and was a member of the 4x1 mile relay team that ran a 15:51.91 at the 2024 Penn Relays, which today stands as the second-fastest outdoor mile relay time in the world. At the NCAA Division 1 Indoor Championships in May, Liam came in fourth in the 3,000m and 11th in the 5,000m. At Allentown High School, Liam was the Gatorade New Jersey Boys Cross Country Player of the Year and Boys Track & Field Player of the Year in 2019-20; in addition to winning the 3200m title at the Indoor Meet of Champions in 2019. Liam’s trajectory to success was crystal clear even in high school, where he ran personal bests of 4:11 in the 1600m and 8:54 in the 3200m. Registered Dietitian and running coach Cortney Berling joins the show to cut through the noise of diet culture and teach us how to fuel smart for long-term running success. Cortney, also a Certified Diabetes Instructor, mother of three (ages 1, 3 and 5), and military spouse (her husband is activeduty Marine Corps) has a diverse background in sports and nutrition. Originally from Medina, Ohio, she ran cross country and track at The University of Cincinnati. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition from Cincinnati, completed her Dietetic Internship at the Cleveland Clinic, and obtained her Master’s of Public Health from Liberty University. Cortney’s mission is to educate runners on how to integrate smart, intuitive eating and sports nutrition into their regimen for optimal performance on the roads, trails and track. According to her site, she wants to help runners improve their performance while not obsessing over food, which is a real struggle for many of us. As Cortney likes to say, “you don't have to be thin to win.” She herself is no slouch on the roads: she has PRs of 17:10 in the 5k, 1:19.19 in the half marathon, and 2:57 in the marathon. Personal challenges have not dimmed the force that is Sam Gilman. A former Air Force Academy distance star, Sam came into the New Year with a blast, securing bronze at the USA Indoor Track & Field Championships in February with a time of 7:38.64 in the 3,000m. Sam followed that up with a 7:34.69 on March 2 at Boston University, a new PR for the distance. Sam has additional PRs of 13:15.58 in the 5k, 3:35.40 in the 1500m, 3:52.81 in the mile, and 1:52.50 in the 800m. Sam’s impressive start to the New Year earned him a spot on Team USA for the USATF Indoor Championships in China; he clocked a 7:47.19, and was 0.1 seconds shy of a podium finish, claiming fourth in the 3,000m. Sam was a two-time All-American at Air Force; he finished 5th in the 2022 NCAA outdoor 5K championship and 6th in the 2021 NCAA XC Championship. He graduated in 2023, and is currently heading out to Utah to train with Grant Fisher and his well-respected coach, Mike Scannell. Sam went to Hilton Head High School in South Carolina, where he accounted for two state titles in the 1600m, and one in the 800m and 3200m. He also set a South Carolina state record in the mile with a time of 4:06.50. US Indoor 800m Champion Nia Akins joins the show after kicking off the year in impressive fashion, claiming an indoor title and proving that she's back and better than ever. Nia won the USATF 800m Indoor title with a time of 1:59.31 in New York in February. She then followed that up by advancing to the semifinals in the Indoor Championships in China in March. Despite a fall in the semis, she still finished strong in 2:04.38 and barely missed the finals. Nia, a native of San Diego, California, ran for the University of Pennsylvania, where she had PRs of 55.38 in the 400m;2:00.71 in the 800m; and 2:43.92 in the 1,000m. During her time there she was a two-time 800m runner-up. She also won a silver medal at the 2019 NACAC U23 Championships. Nia began her post-collegiate career in 2020 after running the second-fastest 800m time in NCAA history. Nia won the 800m US Olympic Trials in Oregon in 2024, where she ran a career PR of 1:57.36; she ended up reaching the semi-finalsin the 800m during the Paris Olympics. Previously of the Brooks Beast Track Club, Nia is now representing HOKA. Nia has an artistic side as well, and enjoys recording music in her down time. Buckle up, folks—Jane Hedengren, the high school record holder and Nike Cross Nationals champ, is back on the podcast! After winning the NXN in dominant fashion with a course record time of 16:32 in Portland, Oregon, Jane has continued her dominance indoors with national records in the mile and 5,000m. The Timpview High School star–and BYU commit–delivered her historic 5,000m performance at the Nike Indoor Nationals in March by demolishing the previous record with a jaw-dropping 15:13.26. This time marks a new U20 American record. Not to be outdone, she came back three days later at the same meet and ran a blistering 4:26.14 mile–securing the national high school mile record in the process. Woah, right?! Rising middle-distance sensation and newly-crowned NCAA Indoor Champion Makayla Paige joins the show today to discuss her incredible journey, the 2025 season, and what’s next on her horizon. The senior University of North Carolina star won the 800m Indoor NCAA title in Virginia with a time of 2:00.39 in March, her new PR in the distance. It’s been a memorable start to the New Year for Makayla, as she shattered UNC’s women’s 800m record by three seconds with a 2:00.57 at the BU John Thomas Terrier Classic in January. Makayla has displayed uncanny range since her high school days, competing in events from the 200m all the way up to the 1,000m. This breadth and strength has helped propel her to the stage she’s on now. The Tewksbury, Massachusetts native was named 2019 high school Gatorade Player of the Year for Girls Track & Field in Massachusetts. While focusing on sprints, middle distance and hurdles during her high school days, she ran PRs of 26.21 in the 200m, 56.01 in the 400m, 1:29.71 in the 600m and 2:06.27 in the 800m. Makayla, who signed an NIL deal with On in the fall of 2024, has additional collegiate PRs of 52.70 in the 400m, 2:47.35 in the 1,000m and 4:38.51 in the mile. A setback is a setup for a comeback. For Shelby Houlihan, this comeback is nothing short of remarkable. After her suspension was lifted on January 15, 2025, she wasted no time making her mark. At the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China, Houlihan blazed through the 3,000m, clinching silver with an impressive 8:38.26 finish. This performance sends a clear message: Houlihan is back, and she's here to dominate. In February 2025, Shelby won the indoor 3,000 meters at the Razorback Invitational in Arkansas with a time of 8:31.56. She also finished second in the 3,000 meters at the U.S. trials, qualifying her for the World Indoor Championships. Shelby is a 13x US National Champion, a 2016 Olympian, and the outdoor American Record Holder in the 1500m, where she ran that in the 2019 World Championships in Doha, placing fourth. She is also a World-Record Holder in the Women's4x1500m. She holds PRs of 1:59.92 (800m), 3:54.99 (1500m), and 14:23.92 in the 5k. In college, she was the first student at Arizona State University to win a national individual title in the outdoor 1,500. Shelby was a 12-time NCAA Division I All-American, the second most in Arizona State history, and an NCAA Track champion. Olympic middle-distance star and Massachusetts native Heather MacLean makes her debut on the show, ready to break down her latest success on the track. Heather, a Tokyo 2021 Olympic runner, started 2025 with a bang–winning the mile race at the Indoor Grand Prix in Boston in February, smashing a 4:23.32 while setting a meet record. Later that month, Heather ran at the Last Chance National Qualifier at BU, running a dazzling 4:17.01 mile, a new record for her. This makes her the fourth-fastest women indoor mile runner ever. Heather followed all of that up with a 1500m appearance at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing, where she finished seventh with a time of 4:04.45. Heather’s resume is sparkling to say the least: she came in third in the 2020 Trials to earn her spot in the 1,500m in Tokyo; she was a 2022 US Indoor 1,500m champion and 1,500m World Finalist; and has PRs of 3:58.3 in the outdoor 1,500m and 1:58.7 in the 800m. Heather, who is now a member of the New Balance Boston team run by coach Mark Coogan, grew up in Peabody, Massachusetts and ran for the University of Massachusetts. She holds the 800m, 1,000m, 1,500m women’s records at the school, and became the first woman from UMass to earn NCAA D-1 All-American honors in cross country in 2017. Fresh off his thrilling victory in Virginia, brand-new NCAA Mile Champion Abel Teffra joins the show today to break down his epic performance. Abel, currently a graduate student at Georgetown, set an NCAA meet record with his 3:53.60 mile at the 2025 Indoor Championships, becoming the second Hoya to win the event in program history. Abel secured the win with a decisive and exciting move to overtake the stellar Nathan Green on the home straight of the final lap. Abel has been slowly and methodically moving his way up the rankings: in cross country alone he has improved from 250th to 65th on the National Championship scene. During the 2023-24 season Abel won the Big East Indoor mile and was a member of the winning 4x800m relay team during that season. He finished fifth in the mile at the NCAA Indoor Championships last March with a 4:02.57. His breakout came this year on February 8 when he ran 3:37.70 in the 1500m and 3:52.44 in the mile at BU. His big NCAA title should come as no surprise to those following the sport. Abel attended Central High (East Campus) in Fresno California, where he ran PRs of 4:14.80 in the 1600m and 9:32.25 in the 3200m. Josette Norris Andrews joins the show after setting an incredible new 2025 world standard in the 5,000m at the BU Last Chance meet, clocking a speedy 14:44.80. (Josette's personal best in the 5,000m is an even-faster 14:43.36.) Josette is healthy and feeling like herself again, and it showed with a massive personal best at the Millrose Games in February when she ran a PR of 8:29.77 in the 3,000m. Josette competed for Team USA in both the 2022 and 2024 World Indoor Championships. She was also a member of the 2023 World Indoor team in the 3,000m, but unfortunately injured herself shortly after, which took her out for most of the spring 2024 season. In her two appearances of that year she came in second at the USATF Indoor Champs with a 3,000m time of 9:03.10; she then competed in the Olympic Trials in the 5,000m and came in 11th with a time of 15:26.25. Josette, who is a member of the On Athletics Club out of Boulder Colorado, has additional PRs of 3:59 in the 1,500m and 4:20 in the mile. Collegiately, Josette competed for UNC and Georgetown; one of her many highlights includes a 2019 fourth place finish in the 5,000m in the Division 1 Outdoor Championships. After an unforgettable 2024-25 indoor season, North Carolina coaching legend Chris Miltenberg is back on the podcast and ready to dish on the recent performances from his Tar Heel stars. Coach Milt has overseen the development of standout athletes Ethan Strand and Parker Wolfe, in addition to female mid-distance star Makayla Paige. Makayla and Ethan both are coming off NCAA Indoor titles— the former in the 800m with a time of 2:00.39; the latter with a 7:52.03 in the 3,000m in an incredibly fierce collegiate field. This run has been happening since the 2023-24 cross country and track and field seasons, where Coach Milt and the Tar Heels landed in the Top 10 at the NCAA Championships, while also claiming 6th place in cross country and 5th place in outdoor track and field. The Tar Heels also won their first ACC Cross Country Championship since 1985 and their first ACC Indoor Championship since 1996 that year. Coach Milt led Parker Wolfe to winning North Carolina's first-ever 5,000m National Championship at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Returning to the show today is the incomparable and inspirational, Kallup McCoy. Kallup wears many hats, including running coach, personal trainer, marathoner, Iron Man, and founder of RezHOPE, a nonprofit that supports individuals in recovery. His goal is to help those struggling with mental health and recovery-related issues. Kallup infamously battled drug addiction from the age of 11, using drugs such as meth and heroin, overdosing six times and spending time in prison. But the comeback is always greater than the setback, and he has since created unmistakable joy and inspiration through his work. A short documentary, titled Runner’s High, debuted in 2024 and documented Kallup’s 14-year struggle and rebound from addiction. Kallup has jam packed a lifetime’s worth of adventure into his post-addiction years, which was highlighted by his traverse of the Trail of Tears, a 1,200 mile journey in the southeastern part of the US. Kallup has also run the Boston Marathon twice, multiple 50 milers, a 100 miler, and a last-man-standing ultra race. Currently, Kallup is eyeing his biggest adventure to date–a run across the United States to help raise funds for his nonprofit. Elite distance runner and former Oklahoma State star Taylor Roe joins the show fresh off her scorching 1:07:22 half-marathon victory at the USATF Half-Marathon Championships on March 2. Now a professional runner for PUMA and a member of the PUMA Elite Running Team, Taylor punched her ticket to represent Team USA at the World Running Championships. Taylor is known throughout the running community for her impressive performance at the 2024 Indoor Track Championships, where she came in second to Parker Valby in the 5,000m, notching an impressive 15:15.01. Taylor attended Lake Stevens High School in Washington, where she was named Gatorade Washington Women’s Track and Field Athlete of the Year in 2017. During her time at OSU, she also won the women’s 3,000m title indoors in 2022, and finished third in the 10,000m in June of 2024 during outdoor season. She ended 2024 with a stellar performance at the Eagle Elite Invitational in Boston, running a 15:12.71 in the 5,000 meters. This race not only secured her the fourth-fastest indoor 5K time in NCAA history but also shattered the previous school record. Although Taylor has PRs of 4:13.99 in the 1,500m, 4:33.56 in the mile, 8:51.60 in the 3,000 and 32:17.45 in the 10,000m, she has aspirations of getting those times down this summer–and there is no evidence that we should doubt her. High school senior Josiah Tostenson, renowned for running the second-fastest indoor mile in U.S. high school history, joins the show today to dive into his recent triumph at BU in February and share his excitement for the upcoming New Balance Nationals in Boston this March. Josiah and Tayvon Kitchen (of Crater High School in Oregon) became the first high school teammates to both run sub 4-minute miles indoors in the same meet at the Terrier DMR Challenge at BU. Josiah is committed to Washington to become a Husky in the fall of 2025, joining recent guest (and all-time high school mile record-holder), Owen Powell. Josiah signed an NIL deal with New Balance in 2024. Josiah has indoor PRs of 2:27.64 in the 1,000m, 3:41.32 in the 1,500m, and 7:57.42 in the 3,000m. Outdoor PRs include 1:52.00 in the 800m, 8:39.89 in the 3,200m, and 14:23.90 in the 5,000m. Josiah was named Gatorade 2023-24 Track and Field Boys Player of the Year. He also serves as the primary caretaker for his father, who is battling Parkinson’s Disease. Josiah has shown copious amounts of versatility and resilience in his short time as a star runner, and is poised to be a top contender next year in the NCAA. Olympic marathoner Dakotah Popehn joins the show ahead of her highly-anticipated return to the Boston Marathon this April! Most recently, Dakotah came in 10th at the 2025 USATF Half Marathon Championships in a very stacked field. The Puma-sponsored distance runner has had a storied career so far, and does not seem primed to be slowing down any time soon. Dakotah is well-known for her participation in the marathon at the 2024 Paris Olympics; she came in 12th with a time of 2:26.44. Her PR in the distance came in 2023 at the Chicago Marathon when she came in 12th with a time of 2:24.40–a time that places her 13th all-time for women U.S. marathoners. Dakotah also has a 1:08 half under her belt. Dakotah's journey began at St. Francis High School in Minnesota, where she ran cross country and track, while also serving as the goaltender on the girls hockey team. She continued her running career at Northern State University in South Dakota, where she was originally a walk-on, but ended up flourishing, coming in sixth in the 10k at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Champs. Dakotah's unheralded rise through the ranks has continued in her professional career: she has won Grandma's Marathon in Minnesota twice and the Eugene Curnow Trail Marathon in Minnesota three times. Record-setting Tar Heels superstar Ethan Strand returns to the show today as he gears up for the Indoor Track and Field Championships this March in Virginia. The year 2025 has been good to this mid-distance star, as he ran a remarkable 3:48.32 indoor mile in Boston on February 1. This performance cemented Ethan as the fastest indoor miler in NCAA history while also positioning himself as the third-fastest indoor mile runner ever. This rising legend also owns the NCAA record in the 3,000m; he ran 7:30.15 in Boston at the end of 2024, famously out-kicking his similarly-stellar teammate, Parker Wolfe. Ethan also ran his first-ever indoor 5k and won in impressive fashionwith a time of 13:26.60 at the ACC Indoor Championships in March. Prior to entering the conversation for being on the pantheon of the greatest NCAA runners ever, Ethan attended Vestavia Hills High in Birmingham, Alabama, where he was a two-time Alabama Gatorade Cross Country Player of the Year winner (2019 and 2020). Ethan comes from coaching parents, as his father, Scott, is a former coach on the Alabama men’s track team, and his mother, Lori, was a cross-country coach at Samford University. American Olympic distance runner Fiona O'Keeffe joins the show today as she gears up for an electrifying spring of racing. Fiona, best known for winning the 2024 United States Olympic Marathon Trials in her 26.2 debut, is an accomplished 5k and 10k runner with accolades dating back to her high school days. Fiona competed at Davis High School in California, where she won the 2014 Gatorade California Cross Country Runner of the Year award, the first to do so from her school. During her time at Davis High she was a three-time California State Division 1 champion; she won the 2016 California track title in the 3,200m, and was a member of a team runner-up finish at NXN in cross country. She then took her talents to Stanford, where she was a seven-time All-American as a Cardinal for the class of 2020. Fiona won the 2019 Pac-12 individual cross country title, in addition to being a member of two team podium finishes at the NCAA cross country championships. Fiona's lifetime PRs include 15:01 in the indoor 5k; 30:52 in the 10k; 67:42 in the half marathon; and 2:22:10 in the full marathon–which was her first place finish at the 2024 US Olympic Trials marathon. She also notched first place in the 2022 US 10 mile championship. After turning pro in 2021, Fiona signed with Puma. She is currently coached by Amy and Alistair Cragg. THE CONNOR BURNS & SIMEON BIRNBAUM SPECIAL The Oregon Boys are back in action, baby! Our Call Room legends, Connor Burns and Simeon Birnbaum, return from a short TRE break–ready to dish on everything they've been up to. Buckle up! The boys broke the 4-minute mile barrier in high school, and set countless state records. Connor set a National Record in the 5k by running 13:37; Simeon set a South Dakota state record in the 3,200m; ran the second-fastest 2-mile in US high school history; and the second-fastest 1,500m time in high school history. Connor is off to a strong 2025 season so far, setting a PR in the 3,000m indoors on February 14 with a time of 7:48.47. In high school, he had PRs of 1:51.00 in the 800m, 3:45.42 in the 1,500m, and 3:58.83 in the mile. Simeon has high school PRs of 1:47.96 in the 800m, 3:37.93 in the 1,500m, 3:57.53 in the mile and 8:34.10 in the 2-mile.Just eye-popping numbers from both stud athletes. The boys' freshman years were hampered a bit by injury, but that doesn't dim the swagger they bring on the track and the grass. These boys are far from shy, and are the linchpins of Oregon coach Jerry Schumacher's distance program. Schumacher assumed leadership in 2022 after a 15-year tenure with the Nike Bowerman Track Club. Adidas pro Josh Hoey joins us fresh off a scorching performance at the Indoor Championships in New York, kicking off his 2025 season in other-wordly fashion. Josh broke his own American Indoor 800m record, winning his first national championship at the 2025 USATF Indoor Championships in Staten Island with a time of 1:43.24. Josh also ran a blazing 1:43.9 in the 800m at the Millrose Games; prior to that he won the 1500m at the New Balance Grand Prix in Boston with a time of 3:33.66, beating Olympian Grant Fisher. In January of this year he set a new American record in the short track 1,000m with a time of 2:14.48–which is the second fastest time in indoor history. Josh finished fourth in the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 800m with a time of 1:44.12. Josh went to Bishop Shanahan High School in Pennsylvania, where he set a U.S. high school national record in the 800m as a senior with a time of 1:47.67. Josh has experienced a lot in his time as a competitive runner, having worked with six coaches over six years. While Josh's dad is his main collaborator when it comes to training, his current work with coach Justin Rinaldi–who leads the Fast8 Track Club–is bearing immediate dividends. The fastest high school 3,000m runner in history, Tayvon Kitchen, is on the show today for the first time, ready to break down his record-shattering senior season and what's next for him. Tayvon clocked a 3:59.61 at the BU Terrier DMR Challenge this past February 21, cementing himself as the seventh-fastest indoor high school miler ever. The senior from Crater High School in Central Point, Oregon, has been on a heater as of late, putting himself in the same conversation with the best 18 year olds in the nation. He ran the fifth-fastest indoor 2-mile in US history with a time of 8:41.21 at Chicago's Gately Park on January 31 of this year. He also broke Nico Young's aforementioned high school 3,000 meter record with a time of 7:55.48 at the 2025 Husky Classic in Washington. He also owns a 5,000m PR of 14:18.75. Tayvon won the 2023–2024 Gatorade Player of the Year award for boys cross country in Oregon; he came in fourth at the Nike Cross Northwest Regionals that year. He is also a National Honor Society member, and has volunteered locally as part of his church's Welfare Farm program. This Coros-affiliated stud is also well-known for doubling at the 2024 Nike U20 Championships by running a 14:24 in the morning and then a 14:31 in the evening. Middle-distance star, marathoner, and Brooks runner Jess McClain joins the show for the first time today, with her sights set on an Olympic qualifying time on the track. In February of 2024, Jess came in fourth place at the Olympic Marathon Trials in Orlando with a time of 2:25.46; this was just her third marathon ever. Jess coached herself leading up to the 2024 Olympic Trials, while working full-time in marketing and training without a sponsor. Jess had previously worked with her high school coach, Jeff Messer, after graduating from Stanford, but took a hiatus from competitive running in 2020 when the pandemic hit. Impressively, Jess negotiated her own deal with Brooks after the Olympic Trials, showing savvy both on the track and roads but also in the negotiating room. In high school at Xavier College Prep in Arizona, Jess was a 14-time state champion; four-time Foot Locker finalist; and Gatorade Runner of the Year in track and cross country. Collegiately she ran for Stanford, where was a 7-time All-American, 2-time PAC 12 Champion in the 10,000m; and had an NCAA-leading time in the 5,000m in 2015. Professionally, Jess has held the title of Executive Director of the Johnjay & Rich #LoveUp Foundation, and has worked as a marketing consultant. New high school mile record-holder and future Washington Husky, Owen Powell, joins the show just days after crushing his second sub-4-minute mile in February, etching his name in history books.First, Owen ran a sizzling 3:57.74 on February 14 against collegiate runners at the Husky Classic in Washington. Then, to add to his incredible start to 2025, he blew the doors off the national high school indoor mile record (held by Hobbs Kessler) with a time of 3:56.66 at BU's Terrier DMR Challenge on February 21. The signs have been pointing toward this type of performance for a while; last season Owen was named 2023-24 Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Washington, running a 1:48.60 in the 800m to gain national attention. Owen also won the Washington 3A State Championship in the 1,600m in 2023, and state championships in cross country and the 800m in 2024. In addition to his mile and 800m PRs, he has also run 2:24.41 in the 1,000m, 3:44.70 in the 1500m, and 8:04.83 in the 3,000m.Heading into his senior year he had an impressive 3.68 GPA in the classroom. She qualified for the 1,500m after coming in second during the trials with a time of 3:55–which puts her third all-time for American women in the distance. Prior to the Olympics, Emily was a bronze medalist in the 1,500m at the 2024 World Indoor Championships; she also took home bronze in the 1,500m at the 2023 Pan American Games in Chile. Emily graduated from Binghamton University as a five-time NCAA Division 1 All-American. She was a multi-discipline specialist, showing strength and versatility by placing a school-best 14th overall at the 2020 NCAA XC Championships, in addition to coming in seventh overall at the 5k in the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Track Championships. She received her undergraduate in Psychology and went on to acquire her MBA in 2022. Emily is a very balanced and impressive person on many levels. Her current 800m PR is 1:57 and her PR in the 3,000m is 8:35 (which she ran at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix). We have officially released 500 Episodes of The Running Effect Podcast. This one honestly means a lot. Because I had direct control over that number. At the end of the day, I can't control how many people listen, where I sit on the charts, etc, but I can control my work and my effort. 500 is the result of a dream and journey I started almost five years ago and a consistent effort to create something meaningful. At the end of the day it's just a number, but I know Dominic from four years ago would be really proud. 90% of podcasts quit after just twenty episodes. I knew that wouldn't be me. We live in a society today where everyone wants the quick fix, the easy route to success, the instant gratification. But the quickest fix is the longest path. It's never been so easy to win in all of history before. You literally have a million-dollar idea in your head. You're just scared to act, scared of what other people will think of you. The Dominic who is writing this today is in large part a reflection of these 500 conversations. They've molded me into the person I am today, and for that, I'll be forever grateful. Fresh off a national record and his electrifying 800m performance at the Millrose Games, Cooper Lutkenhaus returns to the podcast today. Cooper, a Texas native and only 16 years old, is already being lauded for his ferocious and insanely strong kick during racing. Recently, he set a new indoor high school national record in the 800m, flying to a 1:46.86. Prior to showing up to the Millrose Games, Cooper ran against collegiate runners at the Texas Tech Invite, where he set a high school U.S. sophomore record with a time of 1:50.15. During his breakout freshman year, Cooper won three national meets and a Texas Class 5A state title in the 800m, while also finishing 47th in the Class 5A cross country state meet with a time of 16:23.4 in the 5k. Cooper comes from a family of supremely-talented athletes: his father George was a state runner-up in the 1600m in 1995; and his brother Andrew ran a 1:50.04 in the 800m in high school. Cooper has shown impressive range as an athlete as far back as middle school, competing in football, wrestling, and basketball–in addition to track and XC. Cooper’s personal bests in his short career so far include outdoor times of 22.12 in the 200m; 47.33 in the 400m; 4:14.17 in the 1600m; and the aforementioned 800m indoor record of 1:46.86. Professional triathlete, two-time Olympic Silver Medalist, and recent HOKA signee, Morgan Pearson, joins the show today to discuss all things training and running. Morgan was raised in New Vernon, New Jersey, and grew up as a competitive swimmer, ocean lifeguard and runner. Morgan went on to compete in cross country and track and field while at the University of Colorado, where he was a five-time indoor All-American. He has PRs at Colorado that include 7:51.93 in the indoor 3k; 13:43.37 in the indoor 5k; 1:52.89 in the outdoor 800m; 3:42.31 in the outdoor 1,500m; 4:13.90 in the indoor mile; and 13:36.22 in the outdoor 5k. Morgan got his start in elite triathlon when he began training at a few development camps with USA Triathlon. He debuted as an elite in 2018, and then won a bronze medal at the 2021 World Triathlon Championships in Yokohama. Morgan really became an all-time triathlete star when he anchored the silver-medal-winning U.S. Mixed Relay team in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He won another silver as a member of the Mixed Relay team in Paris in the 2024 Olympic games. Most recently, Morgan kicked off 2025 with a scorching 1:01.01 half marathon in Houston, setting a new 13.1 mile PR by seven seconds. He continued to show off his versatility and strength as a triathlete when during a two-day span at the beginning of February, he ran a 4:11 indoor mile, followed by a 40-mile gravel bike race the next day–finishing in one hour and forty minutes. Versatile distance runner and HOKA professional, Ahmed Muhumed, joins the show today to discuss his humble beginnings and his ambitions for the future. Ahmed was born and raised in Ethiopia, before coming to the U.S. with his family in 2011. He started running in middle school, and then became a cross country and track star at West Salem High School in Oregon. (Ahmed won back to back cross country titles in high school.)At Boise State, Ahmed was the Mountain West freshman of the year in cross country in 2017. He was also the 2020 champion in the indoor mile in the Mountain West conference. Ahmed then went on to grad school at Florida state, where he similarly thrived on the running scene. He finished 20th at the 2021 NCAA Cross Country Championships; he also competed at both the NCAA indoor and outdoor championships his final semester. Ahmed parlayed his college success into a professional contract, and in his rookie year as a professional for HOKA in 2022-23 he set PRs in the 3k, 5k and 10k. His list of PRs include a sizzling 13:08.73 in the 5k; 3:37.36 in the 1,500m; and 3:57.32 in the mile. Ahmed had a successful 2024 campaign, as he started it with a third place finish at the USATF Cross Country championships, and then closed it out in the fall of 2024 with a second national title–this time at the USATF 5k Championships in New York City. His impressive range was on display as he won the Philadelphia Half Marathon in late November with a time of 1:03.15.Ahmed earned a degree in International and Global Studies at Boise State before receiving his master’s degree in International Relations and Affairs from Florida State. Coach, athlete, mom, author, Sara Slattery comes on the podcast today for the first time! Sara has a diverse and impressive resume, which began in high school when she ran for Mountain Pointe High in Arizona. Sara went to run at the University of Colorado, where she placed 8th at the 2000 NCAA Women’s Cross Country championships, becoming the first frosh to win All-American honors at Colorado. She was an 11-time All-American, four-time NCAA champion and was inducted in 2016 as a member of the Colorado Athletics Hall of Fame. She earned her Master’s degree in Education at this time. Sara began her 2006 season as a professional runner. It was that year she set PRs in the 5k with a time of 15:08 and the 10k with a time of 31:56. Sara was the Pan American Games Champion in 2007 after recovering from a stress fracture. She also came in fourth at the Olympic Trials in the 5k in 2008. Sara turned her focus to coaching when she became the head coach of the Grand Canyon University cross-country team from 2015-2022. She is one of a few women Division One coaches that has coached both genders. Sara has been busy since making coaching and parenting her priority: she is the Director of Nike Camp Elevate XC Camp in Prescott Arizona; in addition to co-directing the Women’s Running Retreat at Civana Resort in Carefree, Arizona with marathoner Sara Hall. Today, she is coaching middle school cross country and track.Outside of her running and coaching, Sara has co-authored the book, How She Did It, with Molly Huddle; she is now in the proposal phase for her second book on pregnancy and running, which she is writing with Molly Huddle and Alysia Montano. THE CAM MYERS SPECIAL Fresh off breaking the world U20 indoor mile record, Cam Myers, joins the show today amidst the hype of an incredible start to his 2025 campaign. Cam, who hails from Australia, became the second-youngest runner in history to break the four-minute barrier in the mile in 2023. He kicked off 2025 by running a 3:53.12 at the Dr. Sander Invitational–taking almost two seconds off the world indoor U20 mile record that was set in 2009. He proceeded to show up to the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston and run a 7:33.12 in the 3,000m, setting an Australian national record. Cam continued to blow the doors off of U20 expectations and standards by running an astounding 3:47.48 mile at the iconic Wanamaker Mile at the Millrose Games on February 8, besting his previous mile record by five seconds while running the fourth-fastest indoor mile in history. In addition to his personal bests in the mile and 1500m indoors, he has an outdoor 800m PR of 1:47.11. Cam has notably broken Jakob Ingebrigtsen’s mile, 1500m, and 3,000m age-group records. With Olympic dreams clearly in his sights, Cam has already secured hardware during the World U20 Championships in 2024, where he won a silver medal in the 1500m in Peru, running a 3:40.60 and just nearly missing gold. Cam started training under coach Lee Bobbin as a 10-year-old, and then began training under well-known Australian coach Dick Telford, who has guided the likes of Lisa Martin–a silver medalist in the marathon at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Before committing to running full-time as a 14-year-old, Cam dreamed of playing soccer for Chelsea. He grew up playing striker and loving the sport, before running took over prominence in his life. We are joined today by one of the best high school cross country coaches in the country, Kelly Christensen. Coach Christensen leads Niwot High School in Colorado. They recently won the High School Nike Cross Nationals boy’s race in December. The team put together one of the best finishes in NXN history, totaling just 70 points, and emerged as the first boy’s team to capture the title in Colorado high school history. Coach Christensen became a school counselor and coach at Niwot in Colorado in 2016, after transitioning from a career in construction management. Coach Christensen earned a bachelor’s in psychology from Western State College. During his time at Niwot, the Cross Country program has achieved five girl’s state championship titles and two boy’s state titles. The boys have crowned four individual state champions and one individual runner-up finish as well. Prior to coaching at Niwot, Christensen served as the head cross country and track coach at Palmer Ridge High School from 2014 - 2016 (achieving two boys’ track and field titles and a cross country title). In today’s conversation, Coach Kelly takes me through his coaching philosophies, his backstory into coaching, how he emphasizes the importance of balance, the story of how his boys won their first-ever NXN title, how he coaches disappointment, and so much more. Today on the podcast is one of the most successful coaches in our sport, Mark Coogan. Coach Coogan has had an illustrious career as both a runner, coach, and parent, and is currently leading the New Balance team–an elite distance running crew that began in 2014. (Notable stars on the team include Elle St. Pierre and Parker Valby). Coach Coogan's personal running journey started at Bishop Feehan High School in Attleboro, Massachusetts. He then went on to run at the University of Maryland, where he specialized in the steeplechase. Coogan has the distinction of being the first Massachusetts native to run the mile in under four minutes. Coach Coogan played basketball in high school–he was even skilled enough to receive scholarship offers to play basketball from some lower-level schools. He has PRs of 3:58.81 in the mile, 8:21.45 in the 2 mile, 8:26.90 in the 3,000m steeplechase, 13:23.72 in the 5k, and 28:19.07 in the 10k. Coach Coogan's post-collegiate running career showcased incredible range (1988-2004): He ranked in the top 10 in the United States in the mile, steeplechase, 5k, 10k, and marathon during his career. He ran his marathon PR in the U.S. Olympic trials leading up to the 1996 games, where he ran a 2:13.05. (He ran 2:20.27 at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, placing 41st). He retired from competitive running in 2004, and turned his focus to coaching. Coogan has spent time as the distance coach at Dartmouth College, Tufts University, MIT, and Phillips Exeter Academy. Coach Coogan and his wife Gwyn (who ran the 10k at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics) have three children: daughter Katrina, who is a professional runner for New Balance Boston; Margaret, who runs for George Washington University; and son, William, who runs for UNC. Coach Coogan's book, Personal Best Running: Coach Coogan's Strategies for the Mile to the Marathon, was released in 2023. THE DEENA KASTOR SPECIAL On the podcast today is the inimitable Deena Kastor–bronze medal legend and women's distance running record-holder. Deena was born in Waltham, Massachusetts, but went to high school in Agoura Hills, California. Deena has opened up about being adopted at birth and how that has impacted her life. Deena has one daughter. At Agoura High School in California, she won three state cross country titles and two state titles in the 3200m. She competed in the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships all four years. She has said in the past that Cross Country is her true passion. After high school, Deena took her talents to the University of Arkansas; as a Razorback, she was a four-time SEC champion and an eight-time All-American. Deena graduated with two degrees in English/Creative Writing and Journalism. Post collegiately, the ASICS-sponsored runner really took off when she went to Colorado to train with coach Joe Vigil. Most recently, she has been under the guidance of her husband, Andrew, since 2015. Andrew runs the Mammoth Track Club. Deena's resume is monumental and includes the following times: 4:07.82 in the 1500m, 8:42.59 in the 3,000m, 14:51.62 in the 5k, 30:50.32 in the 10k, and 2:19.36 in the marathon. Deena's race achievements could fill a book, but notable highlights include winning the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials;winning the 2007 USA Outdoor 10k race; and winning the 2005 Chicago Marathon and the 2006 London Marathon. Brock is back baby. Digital creator and collegiate distance runner Brock Kelly returns to the podcast for round three today to discuss all things running and life. Brock is a senior at Mississippi College, has a popular YouTube page, and is a budding entrepreneur. Through three-plus seasons he has compiled the following PRs: 1:55.03 in the 800m; 3:51.00 in the 1500m; 4:11.19 in the mile; 14:49.20 in the 5k; and 32:00.55 in the 10k. In high school, Brock was a state champion in the 3,200m; two-time state champ in the 1,600m; three-time state champ in the 800m; and Cross Country state champion in 2018 and 2019. Brock is best known for his YouTube channel (which currently boasts 19,700 subscribers) where he documents his NCAA journey; his “The Daily Mile” series is particularly popular. In addition to his video content, Brock created the OE Athletics Club during his junior year. The brand’s motto, “Intentions Over Everything,” focuses on intentionality in athletics and how it can help build strong morals that lead to success. Brock kicked off the 2025 indoor season at the Samford Indoor Open (in Birmingham, Alabama) on January 18 with a second-place finish in the mile with a time of 4:13.41. Prior to that he had two first-place finishes at the Birmingham Indoor Icebreaker on December 6, 2024: one as an individual with a 4:17.39 mile; and the other as a member of the Distance Medley Relay team, which ran a 10:35.26. Wilma Nielsen, the Swedish mid-distance phenom from Oregon, joins the show today to discuss her recent breakthroughs in running. Wilma is fresh off breaking the school record in the mile in January at the Dr. Sander Scorcher indoor meet at the Armory in New York. This six-second PR places her number three all time in the NCAA for the indoor mile and number two on Sweden’s all-time indoor list. Wilma is a two-time All-American and three-time Swedish National Champion. She won the bronze medal at the European U23 Championships in Estonia where she ran a 2:02.29 in the 800m. Wilma has run collegiately for Bradley University, the University of Washington and now Oregon. Wilma was born in Gothenburg, Sweden. She has a twin sister, Julia–who was a package deal with her at Bradley–as well as older siblings Simon and Elisabeth, the latter of who was a Swedish National Championship finalist in the 800m in 2019 and 2020. Needless to say, running was a fixture in the Nielsen household. Wilma was running fast even in her high school days, logging PRs of 58.19 in the 400m, 2:10.01 in the 800m and 4:31.59 in the 1,500m. Since she started running collegiately, she has lowered those to 57.50 in the 400m, 2:02.26 in the 800m, 4:07.38 in the 1500m and the aforementioned 4:25.89 mile. Mid-distance track sensation, Tinoda Matsatsa, joins the show today amidst an impressive sophomore campaign at Georgetown. Tinoda, who hails from Boyds, Maryland, is off to an electric start to his collegiate running career, and seems poised to continue to chase records and wins no matter where he goes. So far in his young college career he has run the following PRs: 48.88 in the 400m; 1:45.17 in the 800m; 2:16.84 in the 1,000m; and 3:54.15 in the mile. If you’re staring at those numbers–mouth agape–you’re not alone. In January of 2024, Tinoda set a new NCAA record for the indoor 1,000m run with a time of 2:18.05. Almost exactly a year later, he lowered that time–running a 2:16.84 this past January 18 at the Nittany Lion Challenge. Tinoda has had a great start to his sophomore year, running his aforementioned mile PR at the BU Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener, coming in second. Tinoda’s parents moved to the United States several years before he was born. He went to St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Maryland. While at prep school, the 5-foot-9 senior became just the 20th runner in prep school history to break 4 minutes in the mile. He capped his senior season with a state record in the mile; followed by a win the 800m run at the Brooks PR invitational; and then ended his season winning the national title with a state-record 1:47.61 in the 800m. Prior to becoming a running star, Tinoda loved soccer. He was a striker on his team and excelled at the sport. He even hid from his middle school track coach because soccer was his priority. His mother eventually convinced him to do track to stay in shape, and the rest is history. We’re thrilled for you to hear this and more from our conversation with another star-in-the-making, who will surely be making noise in the coming months and years on the collegiate and professional track and field circuit.
