California has a reputation as a blue state, but if you go across the Sierra Nevada Mountains

into the interior of California, for example, to your Bakersfield, to your Fresno, to your Modesto,

you'll find yourself in deepest Oklahoma.

And so it is that cities often find themselves fighting against the legislatures in their state capitals,

which are filled with guys and gals, hi gals. From areas that are not metropolitan areas.

Like your rural areas.

This comes to mind this week.

It's a Super Bowl week upcoming here in New Orleans. We've just had a little scare, a little terrorist

thing. So state, well, actually local authorities, have established a security zone.

A layer of checkpoints aimed at enforcing new restrictions that will keep the huge crowds

anticipated for Super Bowl week safe.

This new ring of defenses, according to local newspaper, the New Orleans advocate, won't keep out guns.

You can't bring your cooler, but you can definitely bring your Glock,

says a former state judge and former New Orleans police officer,

who's advised the French Quarter businesses on security issues.

This is because a law was passed by the Republican-controlled legislature last year,
