Speaker: Eleanor Sharpston KC, Advocate General, CJEU (2006-2020) and Goodhart Professor, University of Cambridge (2023/2024) Abstract: The CJEU is unique in having 24 equally valid languages of procedure, plus an informal and unofficial working language (French) which is not necessarily spoken by as great a percentage of staff members in 2023 as it was when the Court was first set up by the original six founding Member States. What does running a 24-language court mean in theory and in practice? How does the diversity of language – and indeed of legal tradition (in the sense of how legal argument is presented) – impact upon the way the CJEU functions, how it handles its caseload, and how it writes its judgments? 0:07.0	It's a great pleasure to welcome and interviews, although she doesn't really need any introduction.
0:14.0	I will speak of today, Professor Eleanor Shepsten, who is the faculty of this,'s good heart visiting professor this year, whose connections
0:24.6	with Cambridge are both Montfort and Longstanding. She was an undergraduate at King's, and in the 1990s,
0:32.6	she was a teaching member of his faculty and a fellow in college.
0:38.3	And in 2006, she was appointed by common court of the member states as an advocate general justice,
0:46.3	a position in which she served between 2006 and 2020.
0:52.3	So as part of her very generous contribution to the work of faculty
0:57.0	and this year, she's going to give a series of lunchtime seminars, which is the first one,
1:03.0	which is going to give us an inside view of the workings of the Court of Justice.
1:09.0	Sort of things that you will not find in the textbooks,
1:12.6	but which is absolutely fascinating.
1:15.6	So today we start with the first seminar.
1:18.6	She's going to tell us what it means.
1:20.6	They're running a 24 language court,
1:24.6	and I'm sure we are all very looking forward to hearing what she has to say.
