Speaker: Eleanor Sharpston KC, Advocate General, CJEU (2006-2020) and Goodhart Professor, University of Cambridge (2023/2024) Abstract: A common complaint of common lawyers is that the way in which CJEU judgments are written is abstract and obscure. The criticism is levelled most notably at judgments that reply to requests for a preliminary ruling from national courts. Once you understand about language and the Court, there are a lot of hidden clues, if you only know where to look for them. This second seminar is designed to help you squeeze the maximum information out of the text, and alert you to what those formulae you’re reading really mean. 0:28.5	just about two weeks ago on the value of and the defining role of a multilingual court
0:35.5	in the operation of the CJAU.
0:38.3	I had the privilege of taking Cambridge students
0:42.3	to visit the CJAU in a number of times some years ago.
0:47.3	The most memorable part of the visit was not the guided tour in the grand building,
0:52.3	it was not the meeting with a young referend there
0:54.7	keen to explain how to get a job at the CJAEU. It was always our meeting with Advocate General
1:01.4	Sharpton, whose insights into her work give everyone a thorough and unique understanding of
1:09.8	what it takes to be simply at the very heart of the development
1:13.6	of EU law. Like many, I have greatly benefited from advocate from Eleanor Sharpton's generosity
